I was 16 years old. The first plane struck the North Tower at 10.46 pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Our regular viewing was interrupted for a newsflash about the “accident” where a plane had crashed into the North tower. I remember my whole family were in the living room watching it all unfold and becoming more horrified as more information became available. We were watching the footage of the second plane hit the south tower and it dawned on me that it was no accident and I thought WW3 had begun. When the first tower collapsed I started to cry because I knew there were still so many people in there. Then I heard about Flight 93 crashing in Shanksville, and how the brave passengers brought the plane down in a remote area. I have a huge fear of flying and I can’t imagine being brave enough to do something like that, and kept thinking about how terrified they all must have been.
I had regular nightmares for two years where I would be looking out of a high rise window and seeing a huge jet about to hit me. I’ve started to cry again just remembering it all. The fact I was in a different country didn’t matter to me or probably most of the rest of the world. Anyone who watched it unfold couldn’t help but be emotionally affected by it. We must NEVER forget.
