Competition Entry: Valentine Poetry

The concept of love is really just a Chimera.
Filling the mind and soul with unnerving terror.

The Argonauts sailed looking for treasure
their leader finally taking his pleasure.
But what of Colchis's poor Medea
All Jason said to her was, " See ya."

Most know of the Emperor Nero.
Never to be considered someone's hero.
Along with Agrippina they had some drama
because he liked bedding his mama.

Recall the scholar Abelard filled with bliss
who showered Heloise with his sweet kiss.
He went and made her his wife.
Only to have his nuts cut off with a knife.

Consider the Italian lovers famous
engaged in acts that might just shame us.
Are you willing to take a bet,
that things go well for Romeo and Juliet?

Henry the Eighth took many a wife
though with no regard to their life.
He lusted for young Anne Boleyn
'Til the axe sent her head a'rollin' .

Some will always write paeans to Cupid.
Their heads in the clouds: my how stupid.
Why for love do we keep pining
only to end up with our whining?

Yet this love you've got to have it.
It's simply a drug, a seductive habit.
Intoxicating, you need the fix.
For Eros has us all in his grips.
