I remember I think about it all the time.
It was absolutely the best day of my life.
We had so much fun,
And yes, were deeply in love.
Oh, the laughter was the best, it did come from nowhere
And it really never mattered why.
We scoffed when they said that it always changes,
Just a few years they insisted, but
We were in love and it could never happen.
Everywhere is right, we were never apart,
If you did it I did, if I went you were there.
But things did change, not quickly, but changed.
I guess me working dug too deeply into 'our' time.
Kids at home, three right away. It took away the newlyweds
And started that wedge between. The less we shared,
The more I felt it was me, so the less I asked.
I felt you unhappy, Yet nothing was ever wrong when inquired.
Yes, we each had our outside sources, and certainly
We do differ from here, I did not see us as nothing.
I was happy, I was still in love with my better half.
I remember more 'chats' than arguments.
I did not then and still do not sleep,
And to me, the sex was always passionate and better than the last.
Yes, I thought we would make it, you told me so.
Our last night together we promised, nothing changes.
I believed that with my very soul.
I had to, I would have been lost without that faith.
Yet when I returned we were no more.
Almost 6 years now, I understand lonely.
We really don't talk, even about the kids.
Such a shame. I still need you.
But now and then we talk, and laugh,
Sometimes for no reason at all. So I know we can.
Even now, when the promise of a future for us,
Of porch swings, sunsets and watching grandbabies is no longer there.
I never forgot how to love you.
