I found your heart unfinished.
Its pieces scattered everywhere.
Some hidden underneath old wounds,
Some lost beyond repair.
So I sat beside you quietly,
And learned you piece by piece.
The places you were broken,
Where the pain was yet to cease.
And when I found an empty space,
With nothing left to choose,
I took a part out of my heart
And gave it up to you.
It hurt, but only for a moment,
For then I saw the way it fit
How something taken out of me,
Could mend a part of it.
So when another space appeared,
I didn't hesitate.
A little of my tenderness.
A little of my faith.
The part of me that trusted.
The part that still believed.
The softest parts of me,
Were the easiest to leave.
Until the day your heart was done.
Each broken piece replaced by one,
I'd taken gently out of me,
And gave to you willingly.
I stepped back, proud at what I'd made.
Then saw the price that I had paid.
My heart lay scattered at my feet,
Full of spaces. Incomplete.
And looking closer, I could see,
Your heart was filled with parts of me.
I'd made you whole,
But I never knew.
That in my quest to finish you,
Each piece I gave, had broken me.
