Been watching some of Love Death + Robots on Netflix. It's a collection of animated short films, mostly based on s-f and fantasy short stories, and many of them quite good. Tim Miller (Deadpool) and David Fincher are behind it, but each episode has a different director and animation studio working on it (mostly, there are some repeat performances). The stories range from whimsical (intelligent yogurt becoming the dominant power on Earth) to grim (Soviet Red Army special forces taking on demonic cthonic forces). Most of the original stories are from fairly good writers, too, with Joe Lansdale, John Scalzi, and Alastair Reynolds being among them.

And also getting back into Castlevania, since season 3 rolled out while I was off NF for a while. Re-watching/finishing season 2 first. I love this show to (un)death, especially their version of Dracula. Season 4 has been greenlit.

I watched "White Lines."

This trailer actually makes the show look quite a bit more exciting than it actually is.

Tried it for a few episodes, but it's not my cup of tea at all.

Space Force came out on Friday.

It did not do well with the critics, but I think the negative reviews are misplaced.

There are not a lot of gut busting laughs, but as a satire that makes fun of our current political climate, it hits the mark. A lot of the jokes will go over the head of most people... It's more subtle.

I feel like it could have been a bit more edgy. They played it too safe by trying to be politically neutral.

Watched it last week. I thought it was great. Nice mix of characters.

Umbrella Academy...

Pretty good.

I actually went back and watched the first season again.

The soundtrack is great. I just realized right now that season 2 episode 5 has a version The Bad Guy by Billie Eilish performed by the Interrupters...

this one might not be for everyone - based on a true story about a serial , one of his victims who is accused of lying about her assault, and the two detectives trying to catch him. it's hard to watch at times, but it's also so fascinating that you really can't stop watching once you start. and yeah, they got it right in so many ways.

This was good. It was given really good ratings by critics.

The Katlyn Dever Character was the most interesting. A girl that was a victim, but then recanted because she was uncomfortable with the attention. But was then branded as a liar.

That really hit the mark for me since I have actually dealt with that a couple times in my life. It was captured very well. The unease of the victim who just suffered the worst experience of her life. And the vitriol sent by strangers that were not connected to the incident at all.
"Cobra Kai" has shown up over on Netflix. Both seasons.

I did not have the dough to pay for this when it premiered on YouTube, but, now I have it for "free" with my phone subscription.

It's a lot better than I thought it'd be. The writing is smart and quick.

It's been a blast!
Last shows I've watched are the following:

The Witcher - Season 1

The Flash - Season 4

The Blacklist - Season 6

Hunters - Season 1

Harley Quinn - Seasons 1 and 2

Just started Rick and Morty Season 3.

Island Getaway Comp(2nd place): Fucked In The Head

My last published story: An Unlucky Good Time

they hit the mark with the portrayals of the victims perfectly. there's no cookie cutter way to deal with the aftermath. rage, fear, denial - one of the things that really struck me was how Marie focused on the picture of herself at the beach during her assault as a way to get through it, and how big of a part it played for her and, sadly, the scene in the police department happens far more often than people would suspect - she was questioned/interagated, multiple times immediately after a huge trauma - and, as she said later...

"Cause even with good people, even with people that you can kinda trust, if the truth is inconvenient, and if the truth doesn’t, like, fit, they don’t believe it."

something like that happens to you, and yeah, the events are muddy - you're still trying to just make it through each minute without falling apart.

The second season of The Boys just came out.... Welll... the first three episodes anyways.

I also went back and watched the first season. This is good.

I know a lot of people are suffering from superhero fatigue, but if you are.... then this is the show for you. This is how the world would be if superheroes were real.

I also started reading the comics and they are wayyy raunchier than the show. They also Americanize the show a bit more which is fine.

Of the R rated superhero shows this is by far the best. Umbrella Academy is second and the Doom Patrol is a weak distant third place.

I'm enjoying Raised by Wolves on HBOMAX/HBO. Dark and gritty Scifi.

I'm waiting for all the episodes to come out before I watch it. It looks really good.
I know, I'm really late to the party on this one.

So I've been gushing about this show on another thread as I've been binge-ing it, but I just finished up Justified, and it's definately on my top ten of favorite TV series. The source material is the great Elmore Leonard, and they keep the tone of his writing and ear for dialogue.

Mostly it's the villains that make it work. It was a great parade of actors playing the villains--Walton Groggins (what a great name), Ron Eldard, Michael Rappaport (who was good even with a shitty accent), Sam Elliot yadayadayada--but it was also great writing, creating real three dimensional characters. An INCREDIBLY high body count. Timothy Elephant (sorry) was perfectly charming as Raylan Givens. And I liked that Raylan really was kind of trigger-happy, and made a few questionable decisions. The biggest achievement of the show was the character of Boyd Crowder, and the performance of Walton Groggins. Great writing, great acting.

There's a Youtube original that I think deserves a signal boost.

It's called Impulse and the first season is free to watch without Youtube Premium. In general, youtube seems to make prior seasons of their original series' free to view. Impulse has a second season but I'm not on youtube premium so will wait for S2 to go free before i watch.

I'd say that Impulse is to sexual assault what 13 Reasons Why is to teen suicide.

I have been following you watching Justified. One of my all time favorite shows too. My son first told me about it and said he had a man crush on Timothy/Raylan. Every word you said here is right one in my opinion. Love the location photography too.

Yeah, I gotta admit to having a little man-crush on Timothy Elephant myself. smile

The location photography really is wonderful. Another great thing about the show: an incredible sense of place.

I agreed with that as well... until I learned that the show was actually shot in Green Valley, California. It's a small town east of Napa. They did a good job of making it look like Eastern Kentucky though.

It is a great show though. I've watched all 6 seasons twice.
One of the great things about Netflix is that they provide content from all different countries. So English speaking audiences can easily access movies and shows from other countries that they probably would never see otherwise.

This trailer recently came out for a mini series titled "Barbarians."

It depicts the story of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forrest, which was The Roman Empire's real first defeat and pretty much drew the line between the Latin west and the Germanic east. It was the first real stop on Roman expansion in Europe.

I've always loved this battle. And I've always thought that it could be depicted quite well on the screen. The images of weary Roman soldiers winding their way back through a foggy forest with an overwhelming sense of dread as they know they are being watched and hunted.

To me it draws a lot of parallels with the British retreat from Afghanistan through the Khyber pass (Which would also make for very good visual cinema).

I hope that this will be an anthology series where they will continue with other clashes with "barbarians."

I've always wanted to see the Siege of Alesia on screen. Or the revolt of Boudica in Britain. I'm actually amazed that none of these have really been done before.

Barbarians comes out on Netflix, Oct 26

oh, thanks for this - it looks intriguing and yeah, thumbs up on Boudica. would love to see that too. smile

I finally got around to starting WestWorld... Pretty cool so far, only a few episodes in.

I've only seen two episodes but "The Good Lord Bird" is already one of the best shows of the year.

It's about John Brown and has just the right amount of dark comedy. I expect Ethan Hawke to get an Emmy nom for this. It has 100% on rotten tomatoes.

I wish I had read the book first. It won the National Book Award in 2013.

thanks for posting this, i had planned on it - god, it's so good - wasn't sure it was going to work when i heard about it - i mean, Ethan Hawke as JB? but he is so freaking good, as is the rest of the cast, especially the kid who plays Onion. and yeah, when it's done, i plan on buying the book smile

Showtime just came out and stated that they will be doing a new Dexter coming next year.

I liked Dexter but lost interest in the later seasons. The finale was hated by many... (not me...I thought it was fine) But many people will love to it get a second go around.
La Revolution just came out on Netflix. I haven't watched it yet but am looking forward to it. It's a reimagined history of the French Revolution, and from the trailer, it seems that the production quality is top notch. My apologies to all the Americans that don't speak French and are too lazy to read subtitles.... i think you might be missing out.

What are your favorite three French films?

And what do you consider the best three French films to be, overall?

You can split it after 1960 and before if you like. That would be the best way. That's what I would do.

Is it?

Because you've been on this site for a decade and I don't think you've mentioned French Films at all...

Are you referring French nationality or French language?

Seriously dude, I would say that the stuff you try to attack me on "borders on pathetic" but I think you ran through that barrier years ago. Now you are lobbing these to me?

Can I give you hint on how not to appear like a jealous little bitch?

Show, don't tell.

Not only do you not show or tell, but your go to is to demand that other people show.

If you had any knowledge about anything, you probably wouldn't need to resort to these childish games.

Osman... How is this an attack?

These are questions about French films... You don't think it's valid to separate them pre and post 1960 for lists like this?

Why or why not?

I was going to answer the questions too.

I think I've picked on you too much... You think everything is an attack.

Here I finally thought I found another film buff but I guess not.

i do ok with French, tho i do need the subtitles to help me out or i'll miss about half of it. btw, before you go feeling too superior, how fluent are you in spanish? and thanks for this - i find that we tend to have pretty similar taste in shows, so i usually check out anything you recommend. smile
