Roger Moore, the handsome English actor who appeared in seven films as James Bond and as Simon Templar on “The Saint” TV series, has died in Switzerland after a short battle with cancer. He was 89.
His family issued an announcement on Twitter: “It is the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated.”
Moore appeared in more official Bond pics than his friend Sean Connery over a longer period of time, and while Connery’s fans were fiercely loyal, polls showed that many others favored Moore’s lighter, more humorous take on 007.
The actor’s autobiography, “My Word Is My Bond,” was published in 2008; his other books include memoir “One Lucky Bastard” and “Bond on Bond.” In recent years he toured with a popular one-man show, “An Evening With Roger Moore.”
Aww...Roger Moore, my second favorite Bond, behind Sean Connery. This year is turning out to be pretty sad thus far. Still though, 89...nothing to complain about much. A nice, long life.
For generations our ancestors fought proudly as warriors against the Jedi. Reclaim our armored past for an unending future.
Am I the only one who's never seen him in anything?
He was a very different Bond than Connery, but he did a fine job.

Whilst he was probably best known for the 007 films he was in heaps of others many action films such as Wild Geese and The Sea Wolves; possibly not your 'cup of tea'. Gold was good too with Susannah York.

I still remember watching him in The Saint as Simon Templar.

What a shame. RIP.
First Bond I saw in a theatre (The Spy Who Loved Me). Immensely lively, entertaining actor. Though I can't say he was my favorite 007 (Sir Sean holds that honour), I certainly enjoyed his work over the years.
A fine actor and a most worthy Bond (after Sean Connery), who held the franchise together even through the "silly" years, when the films became self parody (although still fun). Because of Moore's panache and sang froid, the Bond films survived. I always felt that with his reactions to the silliness (like driving half of a car in 'View To a Kill'), he was laughing WITH us at the preposterous situations foisted upon him.

I preferred him in The Saint, one of the coolest spy series back in the day.

Has the Moore Saint been released on DVD or (better still) streaming? I have seen maybe one episode and always wanted to see more. Having read some of Charteris' original stories, I always felt Moore was better suited to that part than to James Bond.

Absolutely - whilst I only got to watch The Saint and The Avengers during re-runs in the 80s, Simon Templar was, alongside John Steed, one of the coolest spies the sixties ever produced. Bond paled in comparison, to me at any rate. Although, if I'm watching Bond, it's Moore's bond. That eyebrow by itself got 007 at least six shags a movie.

The Avengers is one of my all time favorites - Diana Rigg (so hot) and Patrick MacNee were the best. The quirky stories, like The House That Jack Built, that sexy theme music, and the consistent opening 'Mrs. Peel, We're Needed' - everything about it was over the top excellent.

It deserves a reboot (forget that awful Ralph Fiennes / Uma Thurman flick) There's only one guy today who should play John Steed: Colin Firth. I'd be open to the casting of Emma Peel, but they would have to be very, very careful.

Oh God, I'd just about managed to forget about that crappy Fiennes / Thurman movie...
