Define "Erotica"

This is something I have been thinking about for a while. How do you define "erotica"?

I have been slowly learning the difference between "Wank Fiction" and "Erotica", but now I want to explore the meaning of the latter a bit more fully.

For instance, does erotica always have to have the act of sex in it? I love stories that draw me into a tense atmosphere, that allow my imagination to work overtime and tease me with suggestion and palpable sexual tension - but without dictating (ha ha, "dicktating") what happens with detailed "he did, she did" narratives. To me, a brilliant writer is somebody who make me blush without making people fuck in front of me, so to speak. Stephanie is a master of this for me, if you want an example: Shauna Robinson's Interview

I'm not saying that pure erotica can't have actual sexual acts in it - far from it. But to me, it shouldn't have to have them - it should be able to call to my sensuality and sexuality, and make my imagination whirr overtime.

So what do you think? Can you define "erotica"? What does it mean to you? How do you define it with regards to the differences with "wank fiction", and what elements do you expect to find in a pure erotica story?

It's not actually on Lush, but a particularly interesting Erotica story I came across once is here. There isn't a single sex act in the entire thing, but I think it certainly qualifies as Erotica.

I bring this up, because i think "Erotica" might be just as subjective.

Shylass I think your right a good story will draw the reader in. If its has sex or not will not matter if the person can feel like they are a part of the story. I do however like both types of stories, with and without sex.

Okay, well my view is that erotica is very broadly defined. Sex does not have to be included. A story just has to arouse me sexually in only the slightest amount, but to call it erotica, that has to be the author's primary intent.

Porn is staged. When you think about it...its crap. Erotica should show character and emotion. Porn is a simple way out of "trying" to gain some semblance of attention
