Like most things, it's a matter of personal taste. I don't think that, as a reader, 'true' necessarily elevates a tale. As a writer, it may make writing a more intense experience, but I genuinely believe that true/based on truth isn't pivotal to my enjoyment, or otherwise. It would be a dull world if we all thought the same about everything.
