Boyish vs Manly

This is something that intrigues me and that I've discussed about a few times with some friends. Although women often praise the 'manliness' of the men they covet, there seems to be a growing trend about venerating men who look quite 'boyish'.

I mean, a lot of the male sex symbols of the last few decades have a rather boyish face: James Dean, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Justin Timberlake, James Franco, Orlando Bloom, you name them. Even icons like Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and David Beckham have quite a few feminine features in their faces.

So, do you have a preference at all, or is it insignificant?

Do you react differently when approached by one or the other? How so?

Here are a few samples:

Boyish

Manly

Note(s): I'm not asking about the overall 'manliness' in a man's personality, simply about his physical appearance. Also, even though you could settle for both, please answer the poll according to which side you tend to lean toward the most.

I've actually read a few scientific studies about the matter in the past; I'll let some ladies answer before offering my own personal perspective.

Thanks and enjoy!
I have a thing about the older mature type male, so more manly is cool for me, but suppose i dont mind s bit of boyish either lol ok ok i am a tramp lol lol lol sorry laughing at myself here lol xxxxx
I prefer the more mature man who's rugged and manly, boyish men don't do anything for me at all.
So if he is "confident and has manners" he can be butt ugly!
Rugged manly looks are far more interesting.

I ALWAYS had a thing for Jason Statham.. often felt shy saying it to my friends that I like him as an actor.. ( crank, transporters, etc)

i think i know a reason behind it
1. Their calmness.

I am harrow and frenzy type.I tend to get hyper very easily and that is the precise reason why I need a calming factor in my life.

2.A sexy smile/wink

the smile or that glint in their eyes

3. they actually CARE

I mean... I have been at this point when i have seen a manly guy actually care enough for me

4. well groomed.. ( no ass showing pants plzz)

5. they talk less and more action (ke)

I often can't find these above qualities in boyish guys. Either in movies or... Real life.

this picture used to be somone's avatar.. somtime back.. but i think i had an attraction towards it coz af that sharp forhead.
I seem to be one of the few women here who's drawn more to boyish good looks. Every time! There are men who've hit on me who can't fathom why I'm not interested in them, because apparently, every other woman finds them devastatingly attractive. I always go for the twinks! And they usually turn out to be gay! lol
I can go either way, but I'll admit I've always veered more toward the slightly boyish faces (Hemsworth, Beckham, DiCaprio, Pitt, Tom Brady, Ryan Reynolds, and all the hotties you listed in your post). Nothing overtly feminine though.

Age might play a bit of a factor with those pics as well. Guys tend to look more 'manly' as they mature, but I'm still drawn to boyish (or standard 'pretty boy') features on a man's face.
Manly all the way the more beefy and rugged the better!

Bunny Rabbits cute and fuzzy they want to love you but they have razor sharp teeth - don't piss them off!
I like manly men for me personally.

Boyish men are fun to look at though.

xo
Thanks for the feedback people; the results are pretty similar to what I presumed.

It's funny to me that quite a few women actually prefer a 'boyish' face in men. I personally lean toward a rather boyish appearance, and I envy men who look much more 'manly' than I do; if I were given the opportunity to change my appearance, I'd opt for a look similar to Joe Manganiello.

Surprisingly, I actually had the upper hand with some girls as opposed to some men that were much more 'manly' than I was. Of course appearance isn't everything in seduction, but still I've encountered some girls that were quite 'favorable' toward boyish men.

I wonder what makes women lean toward one side more than the other. Some explanations that I came across or thought about...

1- I've read a few scientific studies about the matter, and it seems that women generally prefer men who exhibit both masculine and feminine features. Masculine features hint at power, dominance, protection, etc., while feminine features hint at cooperation, consideration, faithfulness, etc.

This is why I asked "Do you react differently when approached by one or the other?" in my initial post. It seems to me that 'manly' men might have the upper hand concerning 'instant sexual attraction' (ie. one night stands), while 'boyish' men might have the upper hand regarding 'commitment' (ie. long term relationships).

I also guess that 'manly' men are more at risk at being 'jerk-zoned' (eg. too dominant, promiscuous, independent, etc.), while 'boyish' men might be more at risk at being 'friend-zoned' (eg. too submissive, agreeable, tender, etc.). A lot of times this is only a matter of 'immediate impressions', but in my experience manly/boyish men do tend to adopt an attitude that's fairly representative of their outward appearance.

Keeping this into perspective, it's no wonder that the 'hottest' males are usually those who display both masculine features (eg. strong jaw, prominent cheekbones, deep eyes, etc.) and feminine features (eg. delicate/defined traits, wide eyes, etc.) in almost perfect proportions. Brad Pitt and David Beckham are probably the best two examples of this:

2- Also, according to the same studies, there seems to be a lot of cultural variation: women living in rather precarious countries (eg. Brazil) tend to prefer 'manly' men, whereas women living in advantaged countries (eg. Sweden) seem to prefer 'boyish' men. According to scientists, this is due to the fact that some societies already provide a certain level of welfare, and that the traits of 'manly' men (eg. protectors, providers, etc.) are thus already obtainable by other means (eg. economy, health care system, law enforcement, etc.). There also might be a lot of 'personal preference' in this regard, depending on the life experiences of each individual woman.

3- This is a personal explanation, but it also seems to me that since the last few decades, young girls are more and more exposed to 'boyish icons'. Young teenage girls are a target audience for a great part of the entertainment industry (ie. music, films, television, etc.), and are fed with quite a few 'boyish icons' by this industry as they grow up. At this age, it's quite a bit more appropriate to present them with males that show 'friendly/agreeable' qualities, than 'sexually dominant' men that look very masculine. From Justin Bieber to every prince charming of the Disney tales, every one of them presents rather strong 'boyish' features. Growing into adulthood, a lot of these women might still carry a certain affection for all these 'boyish' characteristics that were presented to them during the earliest part of their lives.

4- As Dancing_Doll mentioned, age is also certainly a factor. Not only do men look more 'manly' as they age, but women might also prefer men that look more 'mature' as they get older. I don't really imagine a lot of 50-year-old women desperately craving a man that looks like a pretty little boy. But then, few men look like boys at this age anyway.

Well, yet another of my exhaustive posts that absolutely no one will read or pay attention to.

I feel the same way!
