In a general, philosophical sense, we all have to experience pain in our lives. Some even discover they can experience pleasure in certain types of pain, so, for some, this is true. But I'm not one of them.
Doubtful.
Been having constant pain for years and so far I haven't had any pleasure from it... there is hope one day I will? That's awesome! More pain please! Not...
That sounds like nonsense to me. Just look at the joy that lucky children experience on a daily basis. I doubt seriously they would have to be hurt physically or mentally before achieving that pleasure.

Without any context, it’s a very broad statement. Lots of different types of pain and pleasure. Physical or emotional pain? I think it’s impossible to answer the question without being more specific.

For example... perhaps I need to chew my ice cream a few times before I can appreciate the joys of just licking and swallowing?

Should I continue to let the rope burn my wrists a few times before I can appreciate soft ties? I’m certain most people would know which actions are going to be more pleasurable than others without having to test the bad types first.
I agree with Trinket, context is key. Emotional pain just sucks though it makes us appreciate joy or happiness it doesn't lead to either. And though I love romantic love making sometimes sex without a little pain is like food without taste. too many variables to make a blanket response
Thank you for all you replied. I came across that phrase while watching the second episode of season one of Downton Abby. It was a something that the Turkish attache told Mary when she mentioned that a trip to Turkey might be painful. A few scenes later he's in her bed taking her virginity. Couldn't help connect the two and wonder if the director wrote it on purpose.
