I won the Spelling Bee in eighth grade. The whole damn thing. Went to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., representing the state of Washington. I was eliminated early on, but damned if I don't still have the pile of ribbons acquired on the way to Washington.
Oh, and I still use the Roget's Thesaurus acquired at the Regionals (IIRC) and still have the assorted dictionaries and other language related books awarded at each level leading up to the trip to the Nationals.

I have a fear of injections. I recently had two vaccinations within minutes of each other and I didn't cry, scream or yell. I was "distracted" by the nurse and my husband talking about plans for the day. Pretty proud of myself.
