My mom recently got a tablet for Christmas, and I see her using it a bit. I just really prefer my laptop to a tablet. Maybe because it's a lot easier to write stories on a laptop. Either way, are laptops becoming old fashioned now? What are your thoughts?

If you're talking the current Windows-8 compatible tablets, they are more portable than standard laptops.

Android, IOS or other 'cut down' tablets do not have the functionality to completely replace laptops.

Myself, I have what's called a Netbook - looks like a laptop, but is smaller. Less powerful processor and only 1gb memory with a 320gb hard drive. But I do run Win-7 Pro on it and the battery lasts for 8-10 hours depending on how hard I use it.

I would like to see Laptops/Netbooks continue as my Galaxy Tab 3 would be unsuited for doing my writing on

I hated the tablet and I prefer my laptop.

Each has its place.

For large amounts of writing or anything else requiring a lot of keyboard/mouse work (e.g. photo-editing, layout, etc.), I'll take a laptop or desktop PC. You can't beat a proper physical keyboard and mouse for this.

For reading, quickly checking email, doing some basic surfing or watching a video here and there, a tab works great. In particular, it is much better for basic reading (ebooks or web sites) than a PC. Add a decent Bluetooth keyboard or keyboard cover and I could see doing email and forum posting on it, but not flat out typing.

For portability, I'll take a netbook (we have some 11" ones at the office that are quite small) or a tablet every time. My laptop is a rather large one.

If the tablet handled all the Flash Player and the menus on here then it would win hands down for me as I could use it anywhere there was a Wi-Fi signal. When I try to access a sub-menu like the Account menu, when I tap on aacount the sub menu doesn't appear - it just sends me straight to my account settings.

I have so far resisted the urge to get a tablet.

I utilize my laptop at home for watching videos, homework, and writing. It does go to class with me, and is a bit cumbersome, as like seeker's, its not a small one. But for the stuff I do in class, I would not be able to use a tablet anyway. I use my phone for most things I want the portability for.

Our residents and attendings are issued iPads. As my studies progress I will have to succumb to the tablet. (our orders are written into our system through them)

It all depends on what you expect them to do for you.

Loves my tablet. I love you fucking tablet.

Take it with me everywhere.

I love you tablet. You're the best. =d>
Watch netflix and use on it. No cam on mine. But voice.

And porn.

Gets tears and cum on it. Always sanitizing it.

Can't tell you how many times I cried on it.

Tears falling on it.

Even though it has the world's crappiest keyboard. For me anyway.

Laptop/PC for working at home. The keyboard is the main requirement.
Tablet for travelling and for catching up on the run.

tablets are easier to carry in a small bag. I have both, but find myself using my tablet a lot more. It has almost the same capabilities as my lap top, but much smaller and lighter.

My tablet is my favorite material thing I own...

Over everything else..

Coupled with Miley Cyrus Bangerz album..

Which is my fave album in the universe and my Lush soundtrack.

Your album is my fucking sanity..your voice heavenly.

I agree with Seeker4; each has its place.

I love my iPad, for things like net browsing and twitter, but I could never write a full story on it. That would drive me crazy!

That's when a laptop - or desktop - comes into its own.

All depends what you are doing. For writing and office work I have a big tower containing several huge drives, with an illuminated keyboard and massive screen, as well as three printers.
Down in the living room there is an all in one, much the best solution if you aren't going to move it. Better than the laptop that sat there before. No messy trailing wires in a room you want to be tidy.
A tablet is great for simple internet functions, (definitely NOT typing) and controlling the other two remotely as well as the smart TV and media centre that also live on our network. It is very portable although some smart phones are getting big and capable enough to do the same job.
Of all the devices on offer I think the laptop is on its way out, unless that is, it is going to be your only machine, when it offers the best compromise between portability, function and storage capacity.

Both have their uses, and it's a personal thing. Like most others here have said, it depends on what you want them for. If I had to choose, it would be my laptop. The tablets are excellent for portability but low on space. Great for taking pictures, playing games etc... but i can do that between my laptop and my phone anyway. I love both but would choose the laptop.

Although I have a 27 inch Mac with retina screen on my desk, I use a MacBook, Lenovo tablet or mini iPad when I need portability. Using the laptop is no different from the Big Mac, and it has all the same apps, but it is still quite cumbersome when what I need is something about the same size and weight as an ordinary book. So the choice must fall between the tablet and the iPad, and the iPad wins hands down. When I log on to Lush with the tablet, I have great difficulty with the drop down boxes on the top line, and I have nearly deactivated my account by accident on more than one occasion. There are also some great apps for the iPad for writing. The only problem that I have found is when I want to attach an image to a private message from my photo library, since the iPad gives them all the same name when I upload them, so I am limited to one only.

If I could only have one, I'd pick a laptop. I have a big (older) heavier laptop at home and an iPad for the on the go, but I tend to spend most of my time on my MacBook Air these days. I love how light and portable it is.

I have a laptop (just purchased, a replacement) and a 4g phone and tablet. The Tablet is easier to use than the phone and not as hard to carry as the laptop. That said, the tablet does lack a media card slot and CD drive. Sorry, I can't do without either long term, but for a short trip the tab is fine. Really short trips the phone works. I also have access to a desktop, but my laptop for the most part is actually more capable than the desktop! ( it's just newer) That said, I should say I am NOT a gamer, so computing needs might be just a bit lighter than some!

Like most of the geeks here, I have multiple computer systems. My butt kicking tower system has three 32", 3d screens I use for lab work and games (I hardly ever play). A 17" Toshiba lap top and an iPad Air with detachable keyboard.

I really like the IPad but it glitches with several functions on Lush. For instance, I glitches when trying to post gifs on the forum page. It won't allow me to change the order on my friend list, and several other little things.

I like writing on the fly with iPad, but laptop is faster and more efficient.

Soooo, my vote is... Laptop.

I prefer laptops for sitting on. that's not what we're talking about? umm... sorry.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

No, but I have a friend on FB who did just lose a Surface Pro 2 tablet to her hubby sitting on it by accident. She's looking on the up side: she was able to replace it with the much better Surface Pro 3.

I prefer laptops for functionality but recently got a hybrid. Converts it to tab for reading in bed.

I am thinking that hybrids (like you describe) and convertible tablets (like the Transformer and Surface) may become more the norm than straight tablets or netbooks as time goes on. One device that scratches both the laptop and tablet itches, much as a "phablet" like the Note can be used as both a phone and a small tablet/e-reader.

I have a 7" tablet that I use to author all of my stories on - have had it for quite some time. love it. I bought a bluetooth keyboard that works like a dream.

Laptops are too big - and the small one I used to have was slow as hell. I also like the flexibility of a tablet. I have a leather case for it and that allows me to secure it to things like the headboard of my bed - etc.
