Just curious. What are the criteria for being listed as a top author on the home page?
writing a story. and being awesome.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Well, that explains why I'm listed

Thanks!
Sprite has explained it and now you are fully aware of the criteria. Obviously you wrote a story ... and obviously, you are awesome.

Congratulations on both counts.

But, perhaps there are others with a different view.
I wrote a story too, but I am certainly not awesome. I was wondering the same thing. I am not complaining about my name being on that list. I was just shocked to see it there. I have only written one low viewed story recently. I am trying to imagine a formula where I would end up in the top.

Maybe I am awesome and just didn't realize it. Mmm, I wonder what else I don't know about myself.

Well I am certainly the latter and I have written a story and I have never been on that list. There must be a problem.

(Leo).
I have thought about this too. When I was posting Shards once a week, I was usually on it, which had NEVER happened before. I continued to be on it for about a month after I wrote the last one. Then I dropped off it. It didn't really correspond with comments - it has to be views, I would think. And the more stories you have out there, particularly new-ish stories, the more overall views, so I imagine that's a factor.

I think that's the answer. Of course, the rest of us already knew you were awesome.

Thank you, that is very kind of you to say that. I have some family members that would disagree with you, lol.

I am still wondering about the way it's determined. I just looked again and my name is now at the top. It wasn't there at all earlier. Oh well, I'll just enjoy being in such good company. I have no delusions about the quality of or my lack of quality of my contributions here. I just hope I am getting better as I go along.
I think it's as simple as highest average score over the previous 30 days, although I'm not sure how often it updates.

I don't think so. I've gone up on it after no one has scored or commented recently. And I almost never get all 5's either, so I think my average score is lower than a lot of other writers here. It's flattering, but I have no idea what the algorithm could possibly be. It updates every few hours.

It's very rare to get exclusively 5s especially on stories with a high view count. Could be that others dropped, causing you to go up. I'm honestly not sure though, just don't see why it would need to be complicated.

Remember for stories, the top 5% lowest and highest scores are excluded when calculating the average, so this will also have a bearing overall.
I was told once that it was the author's total views (on all stories) for the most current 31 day period. When I was told that, the criteria did not include awsomeness. So, I gather that if you add in the degree of awesomeness and write a story that gets 1,000 views and ... you make Top Authors.

Any more questions?

This makes perfect sense.

Awesomeness, in my opinion, should be the coolness of your avatar (on a scale of 1 to 10) times the # of cats in your house. A = CoA x CiH
I got on it once that I know of with my first story smile It was awesome.

I think it does have to do with views but must have something to do with scores too because I have seen some comments and posts from people who have been knocked down the list or off it after a troll has given them a low score.

Hi Verbal
The Duchess of Tart

Please check out my new story, co-written with the amazing Wilful.

And my latest poem, The Temptation.

I am sure that score is part of it. If an author has more than one story in that period and all have a perfect score, I think that beats out just one story with a perfect score. Not sure if views is part of the formula but could be.
I may not be a top author, but there is no doubt as to my awesomeness. I'm halfway there.

If it were up to me I'd get rid of that top author thingy. It's nonsense at worst and a misnomer at best.
