You would pick the most complicated theme in the world. Is this so you can fucking win you Irish bastard? And btw... I read your story... I liked it... a lot... so I expect you to read mine as well... and may the best writer win. Though to be honest... the best writer will win.

Don't start me off...

The Best Writer, given the nature of how the Competition develops in form, content, style and the attitude of the wider Lush Membership and the opinions of Judges and... Will win.

Yeah... I was a Judge FOR YEARS! I watched writers I KNEW WERE BRILLIANT fail to place as OTHER BRILLIANT WRITERS just CAPTURED the concept in a more acceptable way... Writer's write. Our competitions are for fun. WINNING a competition doesn't make you a better writer.

Unless I win this one.

In which case it does.

I'm sure someone will let me know if this is a contest question or belongs in the improvement suggestion thread. But why does the page of current contest submissions (or past contest pages) not look like the Front page? It includes only the title and author; no tags, no one-liner, no opening text. Basically, nothing to draw the reader to your story but your title and name.

This occurred to me as I was perusing stories in the current comp, and noticing the low readership. Admittedly, I have not read many either, (which I will remedy, to the best of my ability) as supernatural is not my thing. But seriously, Steph after two weeks has only 1200 views? I blog my work. I could send out the marketing emails, but then it leads one to 'collect' friends to add to my mailing list. And many folks don't go for that anyway, hence the option to turn that function off.

Is there a way to make the list of Comp Stories more appealing to readers? Especially with a category like Supernatural, where there appears to be a small but dedicated readership, it seems like many stories in this Comp may not get enough views to accumulate the necessary votes to qualify.

Respectfully,
Walt NRN

This sounds like a really good Idea to me.

Oh fucking great. Now the Emily Fucking Dickinson of Lush Stories is entering... (Read "Quiet" for proof of that, BTW...)

Look, I'll be in the bar. Wake me up and tell me who wins.

Last time Lord Flashman heard the bolded quote the Wright Brother's invented the fucking aeroplane...)

Hey, I finished the thing, and entered. No using "Lizzy's computer ate my homework" excuse here!

(not sure if I can qualify as Emily Dickinson, although she is one of my favorite poets.
Not a bad idea NRN.

I think the reason Gav coded it like that, was:

- So that they'd all easily fit on one page.

- There wouldn't be any bias with those having the most views / comments, attracting the most readers (as often happens).

What would you suggest we included in addition to the title and author names?
I think the one-liner and tags should be plenty. No need to add scores or views. And without overloading the page. In fact, it the stories could remain in single lines on the table that would likely be best.

Thanks!

Echo That!

(I've read, voted and commented on every entry so far, more through force-of-habit than anything else, and a bit of me Thanks My Stars I don't have to roll my sleeves up for this one!)

I might say that as usual, reading comp entries invariably introduces me to the work of fine writers who have not previously crossed my radar and for that alone the entries are worth reading. There are DEFINITELY more than a few writers this time around I'll be investigating in future.

Incorporated a lot of stuff I've never done before but I am extremely happy with what I put out.

Like was said above, win or lose I had a ton of fun with this one.

Good luck everyone

I love & value all comments but yours makes me think I have a chance of meeting my competition goal.

Thank you.

The other entries, which I've read (but haven't scored, I'll score the bloody H-ll out of them after the comp is over), make me want to take my ball and go home...each one is so fucking brilliant.

Me too

But I rather enjoyed yours!
I will read them all when I get my S4 tonight.

My current phone can't handle it.

Why haven't you scored any of them?? That's how they rate/judge the competition.

I don't know how the scoring/judging is done, but I don't think it's entirely based on number of scores. And I don't score comp entries, period. Even if I'm not entered in the competition.
Want to spend some time wallowing in a Recommended Read? Pick one! Or two! Or seven!

It's only a part of the judging.

The rest is done by a panel of judges. Steph can go into more detail, he used to be a judge
Finally pulled out of a motivation slump and finished mine smile

Good Will ---|--- Three Alarm <= Both almost famous, give them a read and get them one step closer!

Like stephan, Ive been reading almost all of the entries,(the remainder are on my list to finish this week)

Im really impressed by the over all quality of this group of stories

I've been reading all the entries too. This competition...talk about fierce, huh?

Not completely accurate. Each entry has to earn at least ten votes to be considered for placing. After all the stories that have acquired the minimum ten votes have been vetted, the top 10-15 stories are presented to the panel for judging. That number varies per the quality of the competition. All in all, it is a just system that serves our purpose. Good luck to all the entrants, it's been a pleasure reading your offerings.
i think i may have accidentally just written a comp piece

Same thing happened to me for the seduction competition. I posted afterwards & people love it.

For the comp or not I hope you submit it, I would love to read it.
Edit: never mind just got the PM. Will read tonight
Too late I'm afraid.

This will end up a novella by the time I'm done.

It's become my baby. A more refined, more mature, dark, sleeker, everything more version of "October Scars." Well, not version but...

Fuck if this bitch ends at only 12K words. This mofo will likely be 15K, if not more.
Have courage, Mad-one. There's a rumor that 'War and Peace' began life as a flash fiction piece about a bar fight.

BTW, when are the winners going to be announced? I decided to spare my fragile ego another roughing-up and didn't enter this one, but still, I'm curious.
