Basically 2 levels further than my first story I submitted.

And I think I remember Ashley getting extra leeway on a competition once because she needed the extra words.

I'm just saying, I can't fit it in at 10K without leaving out an integral scene. If rules can't be bent, I won't bother entering. Which I wasn't planning on anyway till sprite and Ash went and pushed my buttons.

I mean the usual contest rules say under 12K. Right?

Meh. Whatever. If I can even finish in time, I'll be running it by Ashely first anyway to see if it's even of good enough quality to submit in the 1st place.

Uhmm... nope on this one. All my stuff here is under 10K. I was talking about word-count back when I thought West Coast Games was going to be a single story (no comp ties). But then I gave up on that and turned it into a 3-part series anyway.

I think stories for comps have to be judged very specifically by the set rules. I'm no judge though, so will have to defer to those in-the-know.

A thousand? Of course there is always leeway... but that's stretching it.

I just told myself to suck it up and write, if it works it works; if it doesn't move on or don't enter it and post just as a story. I doubt your story won't be of good quality. We are all our own worst critics, aren't we?

Write the story, dude! Just let it flow and if you think it's good enough submit it and let the powers that be decide if it's too far over the limit.

I was just posing a question in advance b/c I have a feeling whether, as a competition, or a regular story, it'll be caught in limbo and I'll have no idea what to do with it.

More than 10K, but less than 12K. And as written, there's no logical point in the story where it can be broken up because the scenes literally stream together.

If it's too far over, get someone good to look it over and suggest some edits and cuts. I guarantee that a fresh pair of eyes will see things that you're too close to consider cutting...

I guarantee you could cut a couple hundred words if you need to...

As an aside, I've written maybe 500 words on mine... The deadline looms large.

Mine is almost done, the writing, at least - going to need a heavy edit or 4, tho - that's the norm - having the same issue as MM, too - a few too many words. not a bad issue to have, tho. i like this one, too. it's got real character. and some sex. nasty sex. really nasty sex. stuff that makes even me blush. oh, and a murder - i put that in just for Steph. smile

Mine's finished, but I'm letting it sit for 3 or 4 days while I work on other things. Helps dim my memory of what I thought I wrote, so when I begin editing, I might see what I actually wrote.

Makes things far easier on my copy editor when I pass it off to him.

The heat of the story took on a life of its own and ended up being about 2000 words more than I thought it was going to be.

Should be next Friday when "Taste the Rainbow" is ready to post.

I'd assigned the title to a very general concept months ago, but couldn't figure out a good inciting incident. It's been sitting in a notes file until a couple of weeks ago waiting for that spark. Talk about weird coincidences.

That old limit was how a couple of my earlier pieces slid through. Since then, the 10K limit has been in place (except when we had the Flash Erotica comp) and I for one am glad. I am no stranger to going over that limit and I've learned to either reign myself in, or just accept it will be a multi-part story.

From the comp page itself, it says this:

You're talented enough to write one within the guidelines of the 10K word limit. If this current one isn't going to make that limit, then break this one into two or more parts. The world wants & needs your amazing writing talents.

LOL Skittles do play a part in the inciting incident of mine, but the rainbow the story actually revolves around is something completely different.

If it exceeds a breakable point for the 10k mark and it's better than what you've written here already(?!), I recommend at least thinking about doing an ebook. Just sayin. biggrin
