Just to double clarify... it has to start with the crime and then the story is about revealing who did the crime.. is that correct??

It cant be about the planning and then execution of the crime?

Just in the past, some mods sent stories back cos they didnt gave a wish yet other stories didnt have a wish and there was all sorts of bad feeling at the results announcement so want to ensure there is no ambiguity here

Affirmative. I mean, it doesn't have to be the first paragraph, if you want to set up some plot lines first.

Is a "Columbo" style story where the audience knows what happened and the focus is on the detective trying to build a case and trip up the villain a "whodunnit" or a "howtheydunnit"?

No, there needs to be a revelation during the story.

Just to clarify, I don't want this comp getting too narrow, or want people to pore over the technicalities.

If people want to be creative with their writing, that's fine. Plot twists are fine. The only elements I'm looking for are:

1. There's a crime

2. The story eventually reveals who did the crime

3. It's fucking hot.

Generally in a whodunnit, the perpetrator isn't revealed until the end, so if you want to write about a crime that it seems like one person has done, and it turns out to be another, that's fine in my book.

If you want to reveal the perpetrator halfway through instead of at the end, that's also fine, but the initial actual perpetrator should be unknown.

Oh, you mean in the story, I guess. There's mysteries like that, where it's basically a shaggy dog story where each revelation gets undone by another one until it's all clear as mud. Don't have an example in mind, but I think there's hardboiled/noir stories that kind of do that. Whether those are suitable for this is a whole other matter.

Damn it! I’ve lost all control over my story! It’s the Noir comp all over again with characters pushing the boundaries I set. A stripper, in particular, is on her knees begging for a meatier part. Sigh.

Well I'm hoping to get mine in over the weekend (barring my looking at it after setting it aside for a week and going "EWWWWW"), but unless they expedite review of contest submissions, it'll probably take a week for it to get reviewed and up 🤣

Wow, first entry already, and I haven't even had what can be classed as half an idea yet. I'd better get my skates on.

Competition themes are my muse! I think it took longer to get reviewed than for me to write it. Yay pulp fiction. 😜 Some of my serial chapters languish years as I suffer writer's block! Creativity is fickle (fickeled?) weird!

Congratulations, Lord Cephius! Anyone who has made an entry so far deserves a prize. I have spent 30 hours this week on my effort, and my husband is watching over me. I think he is concerned (but loves the storyline).

I am with you... I have two libertines, and I did not mean this to happen. They are both so very sexy, and now, who is my character going to fuck first? I love them so much, and my readers will take sides - I am taking sides...

Worse, I have 8,000 words... and it's good, I can feel it inside.
