It's a trick question.

It must be. You're on to something, Jack, as some people don't quite grasp what a diner is.

For the diner challenged: A diner is a step above a fast food restaurant but a step down from fine dining establishments. You might have a server named, Flo, who is chewing gum and asks if you want some pecan pie for dessert. A diner will have a counter with stools, booths, and possibly some tables. The food is not served wrapped in paper and a server will come and take your order and refill your coffee or tea. And usually, you can see the cook at the grill. And it is very rare that you can find a diner that has a drive-thru window service. It's a sit down and eat place.

The truly good diners aren't chains either.

Yep, you can't beat a well run, locally owned diner. Unfortunately, they are dying out, as so many small businesses are.

If it's local, the owner(s) usually works there running it. A lot are family owned and operated and those usually excellent.

One thing on some of the chains, though, is that they are franchised with the owner running them. That usually helps. However, some of the franchises are held by someone who owns dozens of them, maybe other franchised restaurants as well.
I have a sentimental attachment to IHOP. It's where I pulled all-nighters in college. Also, I just like saying "Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity".

I'm lucky to be in a city with privately owned diners, though, so I do try to go there.
Norm's - only in So Cal.

Very honorable mention to The Lamplighter: there once were three, but now I believe, only one, in Chatsworth CA, so it doesn't qualify as a chain anymore, but the pork chops will stay on your mind for days afterward (and the broasted chicken!).
Cracker Barrel
Cracker Barrel's alright.

For me, it's a toss-up between Denny's and IHOP. Kinda depends on what city you're in as to which is better.

Don't believe everything that you read.

1. Huckleberry’s
2. Black Bear Diner
3. IHOP
Thumbs Up is a really nice diner chain that only exists throughout Atlanta.

And if you're in Savannah, the Streamliner is a great diner.

Streamliner (Savannah)

From the choices provided, I would have to go with Denny's. My order is going to revolve around how I want my eggs cooked and they seem to do the best while having the best options.

Outside of the choices provided, I would go with either Perkins or Shari's although both of them are relatively similar to Dinner albeit more focused on the dinner menu than the breakfast menu.

I can’t think of a good tagline so this will have to do. Suggest a better one for me?

Denny's

In this part of Canada (West Coast) we only have the odd IHOP and a few more Denny's. I have no idea of any of the other restaurants on the list ... but I'll remember Waffel House for my next US trip (if I can get through the border! lol).

West Coast has White Spot.

"Diner chains" are not very common here in Canada. Though there are some awesome stand-alone diners for those of you visiting Vancouver:
Sunshine Diner
Van

I lived in Kitsilano and went to the sunshine diner all the time. 1950'2 ambience... A+ Food.. C.

I would have to say though, that the best diner in North America is Cora, which is breakfast place based in Quebec. There are a lot of locations in Eastern Canada but very few in the West. There is one in Coquitlam though. The best quality food for a breakfast place that I have seen. Every dish comes with a large amount of intricately carved, high quality fruit. If you order fruit at Denny's you pay like 5 bucks for a little bowl of canned peaches and some shitty honeydew.

Cora does it right.

If I'm in a dieting phase I enjoy this one...

This one is good too...

I'm so fuckin' hungry now...
I'm the "Hope in the wall" type of place to eat. Always the best food, service and attitude
I love Huddle House the best but followed very closely by the IHop!
Hmmm... good question. My husband and I usually stop at Denny's most of the time. IHOP has an excellent breakfast though so if you someone who doesn't mind having breakfast for lunch or dinner, IHOP.
I have to go with Cracker Barrel. Consistent all over the place and a great variety
None. We don't eat out. If we travel we take our own food to fix along the way.
Whilst touring the West Coast with some Czech people they kept wanting buffets where you could eat as much as you like. These were mainly Chinese places. After a surfeit of such fare I searched for an alternative and found a chain called The Golden Corral where they had many varieties of U.S. food - not just the stereo type fast food places. So I have fond memories of those places as it shows the U.S. does not subsist on only various types of heart attack food. I wonder if they're still around?
None of the above.

We have Waffle House, IHOP and Denny's .... IHOP and Denny's are so much more expensive and the food not better, or faster. The best thing bout Waffle House is I can see them prepare my food in front of me.
