How about just giving a percentage score?

How many stories would get 100%?

From me personally? 0%

I think what monsoon Micky is getting at is this...

I think we can all agree that there are some pretty shitty stories on here that have a perfect 5 score. We all know those stories are not perfect short fiction. But then what happens is that you are now compelled to give everything a 5. You go to read something that you may think is a 4 or average so a 3 but then you see all these horrid pieces of shit with perfect 5 scores and you feel bad giving something a deserved 4 and placing it lower than other stories that are worse but will have a higher score.

I know what you mean that you will still have people who give all their friends 100% scores anyway, no matter how shitty the story/poem is. I mean you can tell from the comments that they didn't even read it. I think part of that though is because the scoring has already become akin to a 5 being a participation award. That's the real problem.

You can't go back in time... But if you could. A 1 -10 system or 1 - 100 like you said would have curved this problem some. A 4.5, 9, 95% wouldn't have the same impact. That would be good. Those kind of scores would have been given more often and you wouldn't have any stories with a perfect 10, 5, 100%. What this would have done is make 3.5, 7, 70% scores more common as well and less "devastating". Just like on IMDB. The highest scored movies are the godfather and shawshank redemption at 9.2 each I believe. The best movies ever made according to that system aren't even 10s.

Some of the people in this thread, one of whom sends emails to low voters... Have mostly perfect 5 stories. Her stories are the godfather and sawshank redemptions of lush? Lol please... That's whats fucking up the voting system. From the beginning it's that type of crap that's ruined the voting.

We've gone completely off tangent now. I think we've had a few too many sherbets and are getting a little over excited.

I don't know what you guys are on, but I'm knocking back lager and cider, and that's strong enough for me.

Does this sort of thing usually happen at the end of a thread?

So you do pay attention to the scores and number of votes... Just saying because you have repeatedly claimed that you don't. This makes more sense because every author looks to see if people are giving them votes. It makes sense to look. Saying you don't look makes no sense when submitting to a site that tallies votes, views, comments, scores etc.

Now if you had voting turned off. Then I'd be more inclined to believe that an author really doesn't pay attention to the number of votes and the score they receive. But being a bit cynical at times I wonder if those authors turn voting off to hide the fact that their scores and vote number are low.

LOL before I begin, M please don't kill me because you know I adore you.

I remember when I first started writing and ,M started telling me her views and my views and my average and I remember thinking does she sit with a calculator working this all out??

I asked her in the end and she told me you can click on and view your views on a page and see your personal average I had no clue.

I checked it out it was pretty good but don't much.

But then I don't really take writing that seriously I just do it for fun.

I don't friend tons of people so they will read what i wrote and I have no clue what my current average is / views are as I have not looked.

That's not to say though that others don't care for who votes them or views them and keeps track.

I take my writing seriously, but keeping track with a calculator is a bit extreme. Once its scored, the calculator can refigure it....can it?

I in no way, shape or form meant to upset Mysteria.

She is my BFF here.

I said at the time being new I wondered how she new all hers and my results re scoring and thought she was a calculator expert.

She then showed me the page you can look at to see all this, she has been really helpful to me.

actually, what usually happens is i wash a couple tabs of acid down with a bottle of tequilla, go all Alice in Wonderland/Fight Club on everyone and one of the forum mods are forced to come in, clean the place up, and lock the thread. being a saturday night, i think that could happen at any moment now...

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I would like to think I don't. I rate the story on the merit of, does it draw me in. Do I feel like I'm part of the story. Is it written in a way that I'm visually seeing and feeling as though I'm there.
Speaking personally, no I don't think so - most of my score are 4's or 5's - but then I only vote for stories I like, and usually like to leave a comment of thanks about how a story came to life, awoke memories, feelings, or touched me.

Anyone's whose had a story published is at least one step ahead of me, as I've never had a story get past the mods lol - so well done all you published writers!
All of the writers friends give them a 5 no matter how crappy the story/poem is! I gave a 4 on a story and had a nasty message waiting on me next time I logged in and the writer also informed me that she blocked me from scoring her stories again. Like I would read that crap again!!

Your car was a skoda the brick was real but fully justified... it was a Skoda shame on you.67xifPnsSVoqIc8n

If someone only reads and doesn't write, do you think they're more likely to give a lower score to someone's story?
And if you're a reader, not a writer (we love our readers, btw smile do you have a red and white avatar??

To the OP... I'm not a writer here. My answer to Q1 is I don't think so. And my answer to Q2 is visible to the left :)

General observations from a non-author... as stated throughout this thread, seems like the voting is a joke so I'm not sure why folks get overly sensitive to it. But... not being a writer maybe I don't get it. But being an adult I do understand overall behavior and for that I do find it strange when there is a temper tantrum like response to any form of low score or critical comment. It's as if some want their stories scored and commented on only if it's a 5 and positive. Certainly their choice just as it's certainly the readers choice.

Phone battery dying. .. need to post this now...

Very well put.
This is pretty much why I turned off voting on my stories (which mostly had excellent stats), I just didn't feel that the scores meant very much any more.

In saying that, it's a long time since I've written anything but I guess that the comments probably give a better indication of how they're received?

To answer the OP, I think that non-writers may be less aware of the amount of work that can go into a story but I can't say that I've noticed them scoring lower than people who write here.

And this is why you're one of my favourites!! Thank you dear!!

So, I've read all four pages and have been trying to decide if I should throw in my pennies. I really don't know the answer to the question itself. But, I have an opinion on scoring and suppose I'm not the only one who feels this way, so here goes.

I am mostly a reader and have dabbled in writing. I'm sure most on this thread have no idea who I am. As a rule, my stories tend to have high scores with low views. I'm not sure what that means exactly but I hope that it means that I have a little talent-it's just widely undiscovered. And, I'm absolutely comfortable with that.

I would hate to think that my high scores are simply "mercy 5's". That my friends and/or other readers didn't really like the piece but scored it as a 5 because they're afraid to hurt my feelings or even worse-afraid of any sort of retaliation. But, after reading this thread I'm sure that some are. Which is a shame.

I actually want honest feedback. If it's too pedantic, uninteresting, lacks flow, etc., then I really want to know what people feel. I hope to God I never deserve a 1 or a 2 but if I do, then I hope for God's sake somebody will LET ME KNOW!!!! I have much better things to do with my time than generate pieces of crap writing for the world to snicker and pat my head about-especially over and over and over again-just because they're a friend.

I understand we are all amateurs but this site is about writing. And in my opinion, the fact that we put words on paper that are grammatically correct and within the rules does not merit a perfect score. Obviously, the mods and owners provided the ability for 1's and 2's to be used on the stories that have been verified. Being verified is the baseline. The low scores are supposed to have a purpose on here. As do the 4's and 5's. I think it's a shame that all of us (myself included) tend to only consider using 4's and 5's for stories that are really just average (3?) or -gasp!- below average.

This is not just a Lush phenomenon...we see it in our schools, our youth sports teams, office politics. A nationwide habit of grading on a curve and therefore watering down the accomplishments of the exceptionally gifted. And even those who are gifted rarely hit a home run every time at bat. I don't understand why any author would be upset if sometimes they don't deserve a 5. Or a 4. Or a 3. What in the world is so wrong with being average?

However, using a 1-5 scale there is a lot of room for personal interpretation. Some are scoring based on how much it turned them on. Others just care about the quality of writing. Others want the subject matter to appeal to them (in my opinion this one is crap-if you hate the idea of a Daddydom or sex with a step-sibling then why are you reading the story-don't give it a low score!!!) Some like them short and sweet. Or some want a developed plot. You'd almost have to have different categories to score with any degree of accuracy. But, since so few rarely give even one score then I suppose far fewer would give several.

Sigh...It's not a perfect system, but for me, it's not worth giving what I feel is an accurate score if by doing so I ruin someone's day. Some simply cannot tolerate the idea of being perceived as less than perfect and Lush probably isn't the place to psychoanalyze them or even ourselves. So, deserved or not, I give high scores or I don't vote. This is not real life but an escape-not a place to have contentious conversations. If somebody needs great scores to keep writing then who am I to deny them their own release from their real life. And perhaps, someday they'll turn out a truly stupendous piece that will make all of the false adulation worthwhile. And, then...we'll all give them a 5.
