WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.Award-winning author, renowned poet and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou has died. She was 86.

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines confirmed Angelou was found by her caretaker on Wednesday morning.

More details here.

To say how she was an inspiration is an understatement. I've had the privilege to hear her speak twice and have a conversation with her. She was such a sweet spirit and far from intimidating. She will be sorely missed.

I'm in mourning today.OIybKOlDx1Fcrosw

I've met her four times, touched her twice (once was a hug), cried like a baby the first time and worshipped her every since I can remember.
I can't recall the first time I heard the poem "Phenominal Woman". I've been qouting from it for forever. I was raised in a little town in Germany that still has a wall around it. I was the "seemingly" abandoned love child of a black American soldier--they have ethnophaulisms for that and my little ears heard them so much that I had no idea that they were insults. Talk about growing up as a liminal being. I also have a strong ass mother that had a low toleration for that particular type of shit. She bought me books. Books. I would not have survived adolescence without Maya Angelou. I used to recite "Still I Rise" in mirrors and to the air, before and during every little tussle. I think every little girl should feel like she has diamonds at the meeting of her thighs.

That is what she has given the world.

Maya Angelou's words taught me attitude. Anyone that knows me will tell you that I'm sweet as pie, but there is always attitude.

It is so nice to see this thread.

I love so many of her words, but right now I am thinking of this one:

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

One of the most truly courageous, classy, and influential women who ever lived. A perfect role model for any human being. We loved her and without doubt will miss her.

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

thank you for your inspiration.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Just her voice is silenced... her words are and will forever have a loud impact.

The Apollo Theater. Dr. Angelou had cancelled an appearance just a few months ago.

I've not posted previously because I felt I should comment on how much she influenced me. But I've realized that really three words sum it up: she touched me.

There was a time in her life when she stopped talking. She spent years as a virtual mute. A most tragic incident happened in her life that made her so but then like air she started to arise, she started to write and express what she cannot say.

-Marguerite Annie Johnson - you will be greatly missed.

My personal tribute greatly inspired by Maya Angelou - R.I.P.

Stones Arise

To mark a poet's remains,
these stones arise.
I never knew but one,
and here she lies.

Denied in heaven,
the soul she held on earth.
Unknown to glory,
but upheld by birth.

When all is done,
upon the tomb is seen.
An honest heart,
I still beseeched.

No mourners cry,
has really pacified.
Her degraded mass,
that turned to dust.

Now what she was,
was what should have been.
A free loving spirit,
that flew in the wind.
