Nope, not just Britain; been there, done that in the U.S. That's why when I had my last house built, I had an extra-large hot water tank put in;)

I like that James has designed his house and got his priorities right? An extra large water tank helps. Have you considered solar panels to make heating it affordable and environmentally friendly? And Kimmi have a look at Velux windows, they are all the rage in London for loft conversions. Not only would I be able to stand behind a partner but anyone watching would also get a superb view (obviously this is information for your friend)
