That is a great question. The ladies might think you are going to jump them and the guys think they might have a chance.
Personally i have several friends who are gay and we always have fun. I even have been mistaken to be gay because i was out with my gay friends.

But I am only one voice.

IDK...I usually smile, as well. LOL
men smile not only cause they think they might have a chance but because of the picture they just got in their head.
and some women I'm guess is because they think you'll hit on them like Red said.
I agree with Red and Chef, its definatly the toughts that comes into a guys mind that makes them smile, but then most don't get to know the lass behind the lesbian. Most of the time the person is even better than just thinking of them as a lesbian.
As for women backing away, i just don't see the point, do they also expect every man to want to sleep with them, if so how do they have any friends apart form other straight women,
and i know most people would say that men are after only one thing but there are actully men out there who just want to be friends or have a chat, just because we think about sex every few seconds doesn't we were going to act on it, and the same applies for lesbians. Call me sad but thats how i feel!!
I've been mistaken for a lesbian... and that made me smile...

I don't think I've ever backed away when I've had the pleasure of meeting anyone, regardless of their sexual preference.

Just my opinion...

Maybe it has something to do with insecurity of their own sexuality, meeting a woman who knows where she stands can be somewhat frightening.
I've never backed away from anyone telling me they are, in real life. (wow my big experience of meeting two RL Lesbians)
As for the men they don't have to worry about you falling for them.
I don't run away from gay men or women that are lesbians. People are people. Reguardless.

I'm wondering what the circumstances are when "they find out you're a lesbian." Is it at a bar?

Regardless, I'm polite and smile at anyone. I already know I don't have a chance for sex with a lesbian, and I'm really curious at that point what she thinks of me, a guy.
I've never avoided talking to someone because of their sexual preferences. It's a non-issue for me.
I think for all the reasons everyone's just said... blokes find it a turn on and women are probably afraid that ur gonna jump them!!

What oniel said is a good point... why do women think that a lesbian is gonna be groping em the whole time but they're not afraid being around straight men?? And whos to say that she will fancy you anyway?

Sexual preference doesnt bother me at all, so i wouldnt back away
I want to thank everyone that have taken the time to be up front with this. I am no different than the girl next door and I don't bit. I love a good talk about anything and as far as my sex desire I don't push on anyone.
I wouldnt worry about it... if they get all weird and blank you when they find out your a lesbian, they're not worth your effort
Good point MM

I agree! I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I don't know about being a lesbian. But in my case the guys flock to me like bees around honey & the a lot of the girls don't like me because I want to become a women like them. Go figure!!
Hmmm didn't know that was typical? When I was 15 I spent the summer living with my aunt's friends who were lesbians and worked at their dog gromming business washing poodles all summer. The fact that they were lesbians was never discussed. I knew they shared the same bedroom but I never thought of them as lesbians just my friends. I just don't think of lesbian, gay or bi people as anything but people I can thank good old Mom for my open mind lord knows Dad is a great big biggot oh yes they divorced!

Bunny Rabbits cute and fuzzy they want to love you but they have razor sharp teeth - don't piss them off!
If I had met you in club or bar ,and hit on you,,and you told me that you were lesbian,,I would smile because of my embarassment, then you would back away because of the uncomfortable experience we just had.
When ever I think of Lesbian, I think of a 2 for 1 deal. That is why men probally smile. For women??????

I'm confused why guys would think they had a chance with a woman who is a lesbian? Perhaps a guy would have a chance with a bi-sexual woman, but not all lesbians are bi-sexual. Many are strictly attracted to other women, and the same is true for many bi-sexual men. The bi-sexual women I know define themselves as being bi-sexual, not as lesbian. The ex-wife of a friend of mine, who ended the marriage when she came to terms with her sexuality and realised she is lesbian has absolutely no interest in men, either sexually or in terms of having a friendship with a man. Seriously, she doesn't, but she's an exception among the lesbians I know.
The first thing that goes through a guys brain in that situation is does she have a friend and would she be into a 3 some..........we are pigs and we know it
