Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Isn't nature wonderful?

Starlings migrate to my neck of the woods this time of year. Watching their flocks undulate across the sky is one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Thanks for sharing

You're welcome!

My parents are up on the coast, and there are literally thousands of geese honking their way back to base each night, flying over their house. It's a spectacle, and they don't half make a wonderful noise. They fly so low, you can hear their (collective) wings flapping.
With the changing of the climate we have had the phenomenon of geese staying over the winter in our area of the central United States. In the past they would have migrated much farther south. European Starlings were an introduced species here in the states. They have come to dominate some parts of the country. Nature is, indeed, wonderful. And eminently watchable.

Don't Red-winged Blackbirds also have big flocks? I saw them on a David Attenborough prog

Yes, they do form flocks, but I've personally never seen them do it. I do live near the prairie and see them often sitting on fence posts as individuals. Here's a picture of them flocking like the starlings.

Lovely pic, Nicola!

This made me smile yesterday (unrelated to starlings) - BBC News. smile

Attenborough is my all-time favorite! I love him so much that ATTENBOROUGH was the name of my fake band in college...which is much more of a compliment than it seems ;)

My mother is reading one of his most recent books at the moment. She says it's a brilliant read (I think it's entitled, "New Life Stories", or it may be his autobiography). I'm going to borrow it once she's finished.

He's perhaps the most accomplished narrator / broadcaster, to have ever graced our screens and airways. Big call I know!

i own a copy of The Secret Life of Birds, both the book and the DVD series. It's a wonderful series - so fascinating. i have always been a huge fan of nature documentaries and he, of course, is the emperor of narrative. he lends so much gravitas to any subject he is involved in.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.
