I have not watched one in years and couldn't tell you the names of any winners post-eighties. They certainly don't seem to get the press they used to. I remember when this city (before I lived here) went all ga-ga over a local becoming the first Canuck to win Miss Universe (Karen Baldwin in 1982). Now I rarely hear a peep even about Miss Canada. But, yeah, it would be nice to see them go away completely. The inherent sexism seems very out of place these days.
One reason. They make money for thr organizers, venue and planners. Until the money goes away, they will keep happening.
It just seems like such a 1950s thing to do.
I have no problem with fitness competitions. I understand it.
And if you want to just make a competition and judge women based on genetics and physical appearance, I get it....
But these things bring up images of women with fake smiles, happy that they got an iron or a vacuum for their wedding anniversary
Fake smiles and fake teeth, yet if you have a sex tape then for some reason you are cast into the devil's cauldron of impropriety?
Just silly.
Yes, they are silly, but then there are thousands of silly events going on all around. It's a big world and lots of people are into outdated silly things as well as new silly things.
You won't catch me at a beauty pageant, nor a dog show, but l might attend a wet t-shirt contest or a frisbee catching dog competition.
I'm good with people having freedom to attend silly events.
We can add bodybuilding competitions to the list of ultimate silliness.
I have not watched one in many years. Though to answer your question, I would say they still exist because everyone gains. The women gain due to the scholarships and other prizes, they differ according to the pageant, the notoriety and fame that can be achieved. This helps even if you do not place as you still become known in your state and it can open doors professionally. The producers and networks gain due to the advertising revenue they bring in and market shares. There is basically no difference in the pageants and these other reality shows, except the pageants are probably much more rooted in reality than the actual reality shows. That is just my take.
I didn't know they still existed . Something from a bygone era .
Kaching!! $$Money. $$Money. $$Money. For the contestants, the sponsors, organisers, the venue. And it’s a massive perve-fest.
There are all kinds of beauty pageants, even if they aren't called that. Cheerleaders when we were in school...the models used at car and boat shows...television news and weather people. It's just how the world is. At least beauty pageants are honest in saying "we are judging you in how you look."
When you think about it, The Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and the endless number of other movie and TV award shows where actors and movie people give themselves awards is just silly and ridiculous. There are so many that they are watered down nothing that means if their movie doesn't win some award aling the way, it's one of the few that truly stinks. And even then it might get a Razzie Award for being awful.
Beauty contests... hmmm... maybe meh, but wouldn't you love to have sex with those contestants?
As long as there are swimsuit competitions, beauty pageants will be a thing.
