I am reading Moon Up, Past Full, a collection of stories by Eric Shonkwiler, a friend of mine whose literary career is beginning to take off (it's very exciting, and I am a little relieved to find I am not envious of his success, merely happy).

I hated the first part – it bored me so much I could have hit the author on the head with a spade at least three times before I began to feel justice had been done. The middle was brilliant. The ending left me – dissatisfied is the closest word.

I read it on the plane this week (Principessa had recommended it here). It was okay. The best parts were when she was talking about art history and her identification with an artist I am too lazy to look up (I know little about art or art history).

I bought it because it was compared to The Talented Mr. Ripley, and they are similar, but Particia Highsmith's prose is so cold and alien, there is such an other-ness to it. I love the Ripley books. Hinton tries to show us the psychology and reasons behind the protagonist's actions, which I don't think works. Too flippant and ordinary. The mind of a serial killer should be a cold and alien place.

Plus, and I hate to give a tiny spoiler, but this deserves it: the last three words were "to be continued"!!!??? Made me want to through my Kindle across the airplane. Cynical marketing bullshit, and a wholly unsatisfying way to end a novel.

For easy reading on the flight back, I bought and am currently reading Stephen King's Finder's Keepers.

The beginning is a little Barry Lyndon-ish, I will give you that. But the middle is harrowing and brilliant, and I think all the sections end up fitting into each other very nicely by the end. It's a puzzle of a book, but I think it works.

I am about 150 pages into Atonement, and I agree that the first 100 or so pages are rather snooze-worthy. It has now livened up a bit. So, we shall see . . .

Just finished Stephen King's Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes, Finder's Keepers, End of Watch). Well plotted and well told, and the last book is truly creepy. And don't let his reputation as a horror writer fool you - he's the real deal. These books are, more than anything, a meditation on suicide.

Now I go back to The Alexandria Quartet, which I said I was starting on this very thread, but then abandoned for less challenging reading.
