2 spaces between sentences

So I just submitted a story, and the mod very correctly pointed out that standards have changed, and there should be only one space after sentences. I agree, and I am sorry for creating the extra work.

Here's my question. I've known abut this change for like a decade, but I simply CANNOT make myself do it. My brain is so hard-wired to put two spaces after every sentence I can't do it any other way. Old dog, new tricks.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or do I, and I alone, have some very obscure and weirdly specific brain damage to the handful of synapses that control the number of spaces I put after a sentence?
Do you mean spaces between lines or spaces between the period at the end of a sentence and the next letter?

Given that he started another thread on the former issue, I assume the latter. I learned typing on a manual back in high school (mumble mumble years ago) but broke myself of the two spaces after a period habit back in the nineties. Modern word processors use proportional spacing and don't require the extra space for anything.

Yeah, the latter. It's such a strange mental block. Clearly you don't have it. smile
We don't have a requirement for verification on one space or two spaces after a period. We just require you be consistent.

I am sure a lot of older authors will still use the 2 spaces, as that is how they were taught in school. If you'll check online resources they do promote the one space now because computers and typefonts now do not need the extra space.

You will often find a very entertaining debate in the comments section. Many older people do not like the single spacing and complain that very thin or squeezed fonts have thinner periods and they find double spacing easier to read because of that. Most people, like myself, who graduated high school and university in the latter 1990s and 2000s prefer the single space, as that is what we're used to.

Here on Lushstories we only want you to be consistent with that. If you get your grammar right, write within the rules, and use 2 spaces after a period and like doing it that way, we're not going to turn it down.

Wait, two spaces is a thing?!

I kinda agree with the one space thing. I just can't get my brain to do it.
i find that when i transfer my from word to the submit box it makes extra spaces between paragraphs.

I always found that too. I'd have to preview it a few times to ensure that there wasn't an extra line at the end of the paragraphs or the hard returns of poems.

I learned to type in a special class in high school. That was it's only function, to teach us to type. And it was all on manual typewriters. We learned to put two spaces after the end of every sentence. I did not learn that this was no longer a thing until I read about it on a thread here a few years ago. I have been able to train myself to use one space at the end of a sentence. For me it has not been a problem.
Most word processors, such as MS Word, can be set up to automatically 'correct' two-spaces to just one. It might take a minute to figure out how to do what's needed but that's a lot quicker and easier than trying to retrain old brains and feeble fingers. ;)

Duh. That's a great idea. I will do that now!

Do you just use a regular paste (CTRL-V or whatever is the Mac equivalent) or do you click the "Paste from Word" button that is specifically for pasting from Word in the submission box? If you use the latter, it should work properly (did for my last three submissions at any rate). It's the one in my screen shot below.

Well, it does not surprise me at all. Lush had established their own rules for writing. This is yet another one to add to Lush's large list of non standard Lush only rules that go against well established rules taught from grade school through post grad degrees. If Lush rules were used in these schools, a work of writing would be filled with many, many, red marks from the teacher or professor under the grade of a big F in the top margin of the composition. It's there web site and they have the wright to establish what ever rules they wish.

Yes, I would have a problem trying to place only one space between sentences. Also having to manually place the period and capitalize the first letter starting the next sentence.

Due to these ridicules rules, I along with a lot of other writers of stories refuse to post their stories here. There are plenty of other sites that have sections for authors to post their writings with only a few rules. Most of those explain the subject matter that can not be posted.

It has always been my custom to create all of my writings right here in our site submission panel. I never worry about changing or correcting or selecting formats. I just use what is given here. I submit from here and later download to special files on my computer. From there I can upload to anywhere else, for instance, a smashwords ebook I may be working on.

The period at the end of a sentence and the capitalization of the first letter of the new sentence is not a ridiculous rule, nor a "non standard Lush rule." It's basic grammar. Like, 3rd grade level grammar.

I'm going to echo what Verbal said just above.

Lush's own rules for writing? Like what?

Punctuation at the end of sentences? Capitalizing the first word of sentences? These are hardly non-standard or common to lush. Children (younger than lush allows mention of) master these concepts.

The number of spaces to put between sentences is a stylistic / layout preference that is hotly debated in lots of venues. And lush isn't even saying you have to do one or the other. They're just saying be consistent.

Lush doesn't want paragraph indents at the start of new paragraphs, but that's fairly common, if not universal, on the internet, where there tends to be a full space between paragraphs anyway.

As for subject matter that cannot be posted, that has nothing to do with grammar and everything to do with what the site deems acceptable. You also seem to be suggesting that lush doesn't explain what subject matter can or can't be posted, when they make it very clear what is and isn't acceptable. The "Acceptable content" FAQ leads you pretty easily to this:
https://www.lushstories.com/disclaimer.aspx#submissions

I'd be very curious to know even one non-standard, lush-only rule that fits what I put in bold in your quotation above. There may be some, but none stand out off the top of my head.

What is this "two spaces" stuff anyway? Who has ever done this? Asking for a friend...

Does correct spelling count as a "ridicules" rule as well?

when i learnt how to type my freshman year of high school (on an actual typewriter!) i was taught to leave two spaces between sentences. however, when i took word processing my senior year, the rule was dropped. i seriously don't think it's taught anymore.

There's almost too many spelling mistakes.

Typing on a iPad, a double space adds a period and capitalizes the next letter. F-ing annoying. DAMHIKT
I always use the two space rule as I find it helps with comprehension. As Lush also fully justifies paragraphs, this helps them stand out. The only thing I do differently here is shorter paragraphs as large blocks of text are hard to read or is it just me?
Remember, either one or two spaces between sentences is acceptable as long as it is consistent.

If you're having a problem editing the two spaces between paragraphs and would prefer that be just one paragraph, as is standard for non-indented paragraphing, then notify the story mods.

Personally, if I catch a story in the verification queue that is double-spaced between paragraphs, I always fix that to single spacing.
I'd never come across any writing with a double space between sentences before I started reading on Lush. However, I googled the double space thingie and it's technically correct, just outdated.
