Editor's Picks and Recommended Reads

Okay, so... I've been here for a while. Written quite a few things for the site. But for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get one of these "Recommended Read" award... things. Or an "Editor's Pick." Any suggestions?

Do you have to know somebody to say "Hey, take a look at this and tell me what you think?"

Does the "right" person on the site (a mod or whoever) have to read it and really enjoy/admire it?

Do I have to sell any first-borns?

I've seen a lot of them around (seriously, it's like some of the authors here collect the bloody things...), but I have no idea what's defined as the "it factor", so to speak that separates these stories from all the rest. Obviously they're not going to be some drivel somebody just slapped out one day without a second thought, but... seriously. It's not like it's a life goal or anything, but... well, we all enjoy an accolade, right? Somebody to tell us "Hey, you did a good job" every now and then.

Anyway... if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on the topic, please drop a line. Lend a word of advice.

And be nice. I'm not having any of the drama llamas here.

Thanks, y'all!

Recommended Reads can be awarded by any of the Story Mods, either at the time a story is verified and posted or at a later date. They're mostly (but not always) awarded at the time the story is verified. However, it's not uncommon for a different Mod to the one who verified the story to award one after reading it some time after. There aren't any hard and fast rules as to why a Mod would award an RR, but pretty much flawless grammar and punctuation, plus a strong plot and good well rounded characters would be a good start.

Editor's Picks require the nomination of the story by a Mod to a special panel of some the best author's on the site. That Panel then reads and votes on the story.

My new story has been awarded the Recommended Read. If you adore a needy bottom and fancy a short, but very naughty read...
Or, if you'd rather, just send me money and i'll hit that RR button like a sexed up bunny on meth.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Think of RR's as a kind of surprise gift. My first story, "My Favourite Word", garnered an RR...I was so new I didn't even know what that little blue thumb meant until another member explained it to me. Having your first posted story garner a RR is actually really intimidating--I didn't post my second story, "Falling", for quite a while afterwards, because I felt like I had an incredibly high expectation to live up to (it didn't garner a Recommended Read, and I survived).

My second RR was awarded to "Tension", not by the moderator who verified it, but by another moderator. It always surprises me when I am awarded one, I definitely don't submit something expecting to receive one. And if ever I am awarded an EP, well, I think I may just stroke right out.

I had a similar experience, Hera. My second story got an RR and I had no real idea of what it meant. Getting one really does boost your confidence. There have been a couple stories that I thought might be good enough to get that elusive EP, but not yet.

How to get one? Write what you'd wanna read, not what someone tells you to do. Otherwise your heart won't be in it. Love what you write. If you don't love it, keep working til you do.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

It's all you can do! I have no idea which stories will hit home for people. I just try to do the best I can.

That's what I've been thinking. I'll just keep doing my thang and if people like it, they'll tell me. If not, they can tell me that, too. That's how we improve, of course.
Nice to see a sensible discussion on this.

I don't think there's any magic formula for getting RRs other than getting as many mods as possible to read it - it only takes one of them to think it's good enough.

Neither of my RRed stories were awarded on verification but they were both awarded by people on my friends list. Draw whatever conclusions you want about that - I choose to think that it didn't influence their decision to award but did make it more likely they would read it.

My EP was a huge surprise, I honestly didn't think it would be approved. Personally, I don't think it's the best thing I've written here but some people obviously did. The most important thing is to write for yourself and not get hung up on what are, in my opinion, arbitrary awards.
Warning: The opinions above are those of an anonymous individual on the internet. They are opinions, unless they're facts. They may be ill-informed, out of touch with reality or just plain stupid. They may contain traces of irony. If reading these opinions causes you to be become outraged or you start displaying the symptoms of outrage, stop reading them immediately. If symptoms persist, consult a psychiatrist.

Why not read some stories instead

I agree wholeheartedly with this observation.

That said, and as a pleased recipient of both RRs and at least one EP, and as a person who served on both Mod and EP Panel, I know for a fact that Story Mods and indeed the EP Panel take their duties very seriously. I've only ever served in a story Mod capacity, (and story mods in some cases do EP, judge comps etc...) but the people I served with are among the finest writers and readers I've ever worked with. That hasn't changed since my time on squad.

And it's worth mentioning that Mods CAN AND DO get dropped for, among other things, not making the mark. (I was dropped, with an explanation I understood and accepted.)

A Mod who awards an RR or nominates for EP is ANSWERABLE to a team of fellow professionals, (oh yes...) and so such awards are not awarded without serious consideration.

I was EPd for a piece that Frank Lee said wasn't my best work! (That comment from HIM pleased me almost more than the EP!!!)

xx Steph
It's taken me two years to realize, mean this sincerely, the WORK of a MOD doesn't come easy. Awards are not GIVEN, they are made by those that take writing seriously. I have had a couple RR's and believe me, I am thrilled. There is no conspiracy here to SUGAR COAT an individual because that would soon be evident to the BE's that be. If one is seeking only numbers, there will always be plenty but if one is seeking literary, listen to a Mod. My EP will come when the quality of my words fall to the All KNOWING EYE.
