I think that a good writer can make a story engaging, whatever he or she is writing.

Sometimes a story which goes straight into sex can be great, but if you look at some of the best authors on here (e.g. Lisa, Frank Lee, Tashtego, NoReasonNeeded et al), they take us on a marvelous journey and by the time the sex comes into play, you're pretty much desperate to read it

So, in answer to the question, for me the main thing is that the story is well written and engaging - if I'm hooked on the writing, they can take me at whatever speed they like... I'm in!

smile
Sure!

I've certainly seen plenty stories that would fall into that category, so there's obviously a demand there for it...

(I agree that Workplace might be more encompassing though)

Maybe in Scotland, not in Canada.

Q: Are “ensure” and “insure” interchangeable?

Some stylebooks say yes, and some say no. Are you any less confused? These two words are often used in place of each other, but WD’s style separates them.WD—and many other publications—uses “insure” only when referring to financial insurance policies. After signing a contract with a professional baseball team, Jack decided to insure his pitching arm for $1 million.

When the meaning is “to make certain,” WD sticks with “ensure.” It’s my job to ensure that you don’t misuse terms like these.

There are some newspapers and magazines, such as The New York Times and The New Yorker, that still use “insure” in both instances, but it’s fairly archaic to do so. Most publications differentiate the two.

I wished it was not so hard to have a story submitted, quotation marks, paragraphs, ect, maybe the editors that read them and deny them can fix them too

Although it can be disheartening to have a story rejected (and I've had stories rejected), I think it's important that whenever possible, stories should be submitted as correctly as possible.

Verifying stories is a time-consuming process and the mods simply do not have the time or resources to fix or edit every story which is submitted - take a look at the front/home page and see how many stories go "live" every day!

To properly and thoroughly proofread and correct a story can take hours, depending on the original quality of the story.

You have to realise that the mods here are volunteers and do this work for Lush because they are committed to the constant improvement and overall quality of the site and want to give something back for the wonderful community that we have here.

Although they cannot "fix" stories for people, they will steer you in the right direction, pointing out the areas which need improvement and providing useful links to help you with your story's specific issues. They are also very approachable and if you are unsure how to go about fixing your story, you can PM the mod (or any story verifier) and ask them for help and guidance, which they are generally forthcoming and helpful in providing (time permitting of course)

There are also excellent forums here which will help you to improve your work.

I'm not sure that people are quite aware of what a draining and time-consuming task it can be to verify stories, but it really is. It can be a tough and stressful job. They will usually fix one or two small or minor errors, but anything more than that really is the writer's responsibility.

Generally speaking, if you make sure to carefully spell check your work and proof read it (an excellent tip I was once given was to read my stories aloud before submitting them, it really does make any errors much more noticeable). My point is, that if the mods can see that you have tried very hard with your story and listened to their advice and corrected what you can before re-submitting, they will be much more understanding.

Can I also offer that it is very worthwhile to take the extra time to work on your story and make it as good as it can be - your scores and comments will improve and you'll build up a following and take more pride in what you write. Also, see if any of your friends would be willing to read over your work first - sometimes when you're involved in a piece, it's more difficult to be objective and see problems or mistakes...

I have to say that I personally do not have very much time at present to read stories, so I find it rather annoying when I get one which is simply littered with careless errors - I mean, if the writer isn't prepared to make an effort with what they post, why should the reader make an effort to look at it? (not that this happens too much here - sub standard stories are generally sent back to the author to be corrected before they can be posted on the site)

Anyway, good luck with your continued writing!!

That shouldn't be possible. The only category which has the constraints in place, should be the Flash Erotica one. Submissions in other categories should be programmatically disallowed.

Please can you message you know who!

Yes, of course I will!

Don't know if this is right place to post this. Can we have it be a secret on what we score/rate a story or poem? I'm assuming authors like to have their work commented on, but maybe it's best not to score/rate it?
I just gave a "friend" a score of 4, then wrote a nice comment about enjoying the work.
I got a black box asking why a 4. I gave my reply that it had too many similiarities to other works (or something like that). Then I said I wish I could rate the best work a 5++++++, but I only had a 4 or 5 to choose from.
This was his response: " your reasoning sounds so typical...I am not porn writer...you disrespect my work and that's deceiving and like typical lushers "
Ouch! I said I certainly did not mean to disrespect his work, but feel free to un-friend me.
His response: : “consider it done...you are a disgrace "
I would hesitate to rate any more people if they can see what I rated. That HURT and I don't like hurting others - obviously I did.

Sorry to hear about this Elizabeth. You shouldn't feel guilty about the score you give (and knowing you a little, I'm of the opinion that your votes tend to be very fair and balanced). Sadly some do get bent out of shape for scores below a five, whether they are warranted it not.

You can disable scores in your account settings, so that people won't be able to see when you vote... Pity if you have to do it though...

Can I just point something out?

I've spotted a few stories which have been entered into the competition but haven't actually been in the Flash Erotica category. I've PMd the authors as I've noticed this as I assume that they wouldn't qualify?

I really just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention because even though it raises the stakes, I'd really hate anyone to miss out because of a technicality like this...
I actually did it!!!

I overcame my writer's block and managed to submit a story for the competition!!

I have to say I was VERY impressed by how quickly the mod team got it up onto the front page for me too!

I even recorded an audio version which Super Gav has attached ALREADY!!

I'm so pleased!! Now I can relax and get myself caught up on the rest of the entries!!
I honestly think that the timeline is great the way it is.

The only thing that would "improve" it, in my opinion, would be if you could see all your comments, wall posts, quotes, scores etc, by clicking a category link at the top of the page (the same as you can click on your newsfeed/profile page - I know that sometimes if there's been a lot of activity on my 'profile' you sometimes have to do quite a bit of scrolling to see who's done what)

With regard to scoring, I just think that it is what it is. We have such a huge membership now that my observation is that the way people vote has changed.

If you want to keep all 5s, then forced commenting is the way to go (although that's not infallible and personally, I generally don't vote in those instances as I prefer it to be my choice, not something foisted on me)

My scores are generally lower now than they used to be (not that I've actually posted anything in a while) I just suck it up now...

If people like what I write, great, if not, that's fine too...

It's all good...
Ooooh, splendid stuff!! I bet this will be a well-attended comp, hell, maybe I'll even manage to submit something this time!!

What an excellent way to promote an exciting new category too!

Good luck everyone!!

Literally never seen before - Write a Secret Letter in Semen

It's 1944, and this time you're a British spy. God, you are so cool. This really makes up for the time your mom found your dildo collection, right? Anyway, spy stuff: You need to get a message to your contact, but you know it will be intercepted by the enemy. They can detect invisible ink. What do you do? What would Jason Bourne do? What would James Bond do? And then you have your answer: You start furiously masturbating.

So they'll see you and leave embarrassed, buying you 10 more minutes?

Wait, What?

It's true -- one of the British's secret spy weapons was whackin' it.

Semen, it turns out, is a very effective invisible ink. Like other invisible inks, semen is undetectable when it dries out, but it has one big advantage over its competitors -- it doesn't react to iodine vapor. Since iodine vapor was the main detection method for invisible ink during the war, writing code in semen meant that even if a message was intercepted, its secrets most likely wouldn't be revealed. For a male spy, at least, it was plentiful, easy to transport, and always available. Female spies probably preferred to take their chances with the iodine.

This technique was actually used in the field, where only one flaw was found -- its distinctive smell. While fresh "ink" apparently didn't give off too malodorous a scent, one spy in Copenhagen stored his jam in jars, causing his letters to "stink to high heaven," and was told that a "fresh operation" was necessary for each communique. "Fresh operation" is easily our favorite World War II slang for jerking off, beating out "doing my bit for the war effort" and "loosing the soldiers on the beaches of Normandy."

Oh, and the guy whose research lead to the discovery of semen as invisible ink? His name was Cumming. History: It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Woop woop!!

No excuse to not be able to find something good to read amongst that lot then!!

ggggrrrrrr cant get picture to work

Your picture won't post because you haven't yet made enough forum posts (it's to stop people just making an account and spamming the place, you know?)

Once you have made 20 forum posts, you will be able to add pictures and videos to them.

Welcome to Lush

I adore Rodrigo y Gabriela - I've been lucky enough to see them live twice (if you ever get the chance - GO!)

They're both wonderful guitarists in their own right but together? Man, they're like a well-oiled machine! They're both so pretty too - lovely to watch and listen to.

I've got a lot of favourite guitarists, including Matt Bellamy of Muse (who seems to be hugely skilled at many instruments and has an amazing voice)

I may come back and add some more later!

Well done to everyone who entered the comp, for getting your asses in gear to do so! (heaven knows I never managed it!! lol)

A special congrats to the top three winning entries and honorable mentions - well done indeed!

I'm afraid I never got the chance to read as many in this particular competition as I would have liked. Oh well, more to add to my HUGE reading list...
