I'd have thought Eddie Murphy would be good to play such an outlandish character...

I've started adding loads of stories to my reading queue. I have about 10 or 15 in there now. When I open the reading queue (and please call me dizzy if you like), I can never remember who the authors were unless I open the story from the queue, which in turn makes it disappear from the queue. This is a bit of a pain if I want to read a story from a specific author/profile I've looked at and saved for another time.. Can the author also be added alongside the title of the story in the reading queue?

I suggested this a while back and I know it's been brought up before...

If we could have more detail, it would be fab (maybe as they'd appear on the front page, or even just with the genre/tags, one liner and author)

It would be fab if we manually had to remove them from our queue, as I've lost a few that way too..
Ha, got a few new faces, huh?

Welcome MadameMolly!! Hope you enjoy your stay! smile

And Tell?? We KNEW you'd be back!!! (You owe me $20, CG) (ke)

So, did you know that this Thursday is Nude Reading Day?

Just thought I'd let you know! smile

Ugh! It happens ALL the time to me!!

That is why I end up get nothing written...

I'm sorry if this has already been a thing (I haven't read all 73 pages in the thread!), but I think it would be great if there was a Pre-Friend Request Message feature.

I mention in my bio that I'm unable to do any chatting, and that I'm uninterested in role playing. I then get multiple friend request each day telling me how much they look forward to chatting with me and getting into some role play with me. Ugh. I don't want to be a bitch and just ignore them or not accept them as a friend, so I find myself constantly explaining in direct PMs about my no chat situation.

It might not completely eliminate the problem, but I would love for there to be the option to have a customized little message pop up when someone clicks on my "Ask to be a Friend" link where I can emphasis that I'm not a chatter so that no one ends up disappointed. I also notice that 93.4% of the women here stress in their bio that they are not interested in friending men, so a pop-up message that addresses this would probably be useful for them as well. I realize that if they aren't reading someone's bio, that they may just blow by the pre-friend message, but it could save everyone a lot of fiddling around.

I think that's a super idea!

Unfortunately for me, due to life throwing me a curve ball, anything that I write now is crap! I need to get my mojo back.

I will say that if you don't enjoy what you write, chances are that your audience won't either... Which is why I don't post crap, I'm like Liz, it gets buried.

I totally resonate with this - I just can't write at the moment, crap or otherwise...

Hopefully I'll get out of it soon...

To be honest, the "problem" isn't the scoring system.

It's people who think all perfect 5's from their thirsty friends makes them a better writer. It's people who lie to themselves thinking they are a better writer when they ask people to give them a score. It's people who intentionally try to lower a popular or better author's score because they think their own now higher overall score makes them a better author. It's people who are so weak they will give you a 2 on a story out of hate or jealousy. It's people who recieve a 4 from someone and then go and give that person a 3 for daring to think their shit story should only get a generous 4. It's people who write a story because they want to recieve votes and lie to themselves that they got those votes because someone enjoyed their writing and not because they begged, sent nudes, mass emailed everyone, and generally nagged to get those votes.

I have never understood how anyone can get any satisfaction from that, but they do. No voting system can really get rid of that element on Lush. It's like a girl scout who had her dad, who is a boss, take all her cookies to his office and force his employees to buy them all versus the girl scout who went door to door dragging her cookies in a cart to try and sell them all. So the door to door girl scout didn't sell as many as the girl scout with the boss daddy... Does that really make the girl scout with the boss daddy a better girl scout? I don't think so.

There will always be cheap ass people. No voting system will ever change that.

Excellent post MF, really well put...

This ... soooo true.

And we all have felt the pressure to give a 5 to a friend's writing, not because it is outstanding, even if it did receive a RR honour .... but because you don't want to be singled out as giving them a 4 that then lowers their over-all score and drops them from the Top Author List.

It's a tough fence to walk.

I agree with this too VG - it can be hard to vote honestly, which in itself diminishes how realistic an all-5 score is... Nowadays, I'm more likely to simply not vote at all and just leave a diplomatic comment. You can usually find something nice to say about a story or poem.

I don't have so much time to read at the moment, so I like to choose carefully and while I do like to support my friends and there are a few who I genuinely look forward to reading, it does disappoint me if I can see they've not put in the work, so to speak.

Buz, for example, always turns out a great tale and it's not just the quality and content of his writing, but his attention to detail. I must say that it's incredibly rare to spot mistakes or typos in his work. That's because he works so hard at the whole process. It makes it a real pleasure to read his work, and I always look forward to his new posts.

There are a few other writers who specifically stand out for the same reasons - NoReasonNeeded, DancingDoll, Sisyphus, LadyX, Lisa, to name but a few. The point being that I know in setting aside half an hour or whatever to read their work, I will not be wasting my time. I also know that these are authors whom I can score and comment honestly, without fear of reprisal.

In essence, they come across as professional in all senses of the word. I like that and aspire to it myself.

Hi,

My name is Aquadude, and I wrote two stories. I got one comment. Obviously I didn't do something right. Is there something that I could do to bring in some feedback?
Thanks
Aquadude, fer sure.

Hi AD, welcome to the forums.

I see you've already been given some top notch advice, but I'm going to add my two cents' worth as well.

In order to get lots of scores and votes you've either got to get very lucky or you've got to up your game a bit. I see that you've been here for quite a while and yet, looking at your profile, you don't have much info about yourself, you've still got a standard issue red and white AV and it doesn't look as though you've voted or commented on any stories.

Stand out from the crowd. You should get yourself an AV, something that people will recognise on the front page and click on your stories. Fill out your bio - people like to know who they are reading.

There are many writers here, with many stories posted. You need to make yours stand out a little from them, as the chances of them simply finding yours are slim. They're not very likely to click on them by accident (or on purpose). It helps if your stories are well written and laid out, it's easier for the reader to like and enjoy them.

Diversify. You might want to take a look at the story categories - you'll notice that some genres get more interest than others and you might benefit from posting something in one of those.

Make some friends. Every time you post a story, comment on a story, vote, blog or post in the forums, it shows up on your friends' timelines (depending on your privacy settings) and people are more likely to click on you if they see you there.

Vote and comment on the stories written by others - people will often return the courtesy and it can be helpful to get votes and feedback too. Add some to your favourites, add some to your reading queue - these things show up on the writer's timeline.

Socialise - Get yourself out into the forums. Again, people will start to get used to seeing you around and it's also a great way to meet some of us other Lushies and make new friends who'll be more inclined to read your stories.

Promote your stories. Make up a forum sig - it doesn't have to be a fancy schmancy one, just enough to link to your stories or have something eye-catching. Choose a cover picture to put on your stories too - again it can encourage people to read your story once they click on it (because clicking on it does not guarantee and actual read).

Keep trying. It can take some time to build up a following, don't be disheartened. Keep writing, get some more stories posted - they stay on the front page for some time now, giving you time to be seen. Improve your craft. experiment with different styles and genres, see what the readership likes...

Anyway, I hope some of this helps. Good luck!
Did someone say they couldn't find the bottle opener?

I think this one seems just about perfect! Look at the craftsmanship!

This made me giggle and it's educational too, Grammar Nazis!!

I am with clum on this one. I am sorry for all of you who have had stories stolen and I understand your frustration - you have every right in the world to be pissed. However I have learned (the hard way) to pick my battles and this is just not one of them.
First off, I am not in the habit of getting into fights I can't possibly win. Even if we bombard these sites and get them closed down, another will pop up like tissues in a Kleenex box as soon as we do. This is like our troublemakers on Lush - they disappear in one place only to pop up somewhere else under a new name. In addition, since some of these sites are in foreign countries, there isn't a whole lot that can be done to pressure them into compliance anyway.
Next, I have not been shy in telling you all that I write my stories for me first of all. My writing is therapeutic for me - it helps me express the dreams, fantasies and feelings that otherwise would drive me out of my flipping mind. So writing, whether accepted or not, whether stolen or not, helps me. The fact that others like my stories is icing on the cake. And the fact that someone would go to the trouble of stealing my story is in a twisted way a compliment!
Is it right - no. Should these people be punished for their crime - sure. But if everyone was called on every thing they did wrong in this world, the Internet would be a far different and far lonelier place!

Actually, J... In this case, the perp did listen to our collective voices and not only took down the stories AND site, but she apologised to each of us there and responded to my personal email...

So, we DID make a difference... this time!
The guy (I assume) responded to my email.

I'll send a reply, (maybe linking him to this thread, what do you think?) explaining how hard we work at what we do and the time it takes etc etc...

I just saw their thank you to me... I emailed the address and thanked them for removing the stories...

(my words weren't "kind" BTW - they were pissed)
