Manufacturers have been known to do things like this to search for hacked and illegal copies of their software. I know of one that actually crashed your computer by editing a key boot file if they detected an illegal serial number.

I couldn't imagine asking without reading their profile. I'm not militant about it, but when I ask to be someone's friend it's as much out of curiosity as it is respect and a bit of admiration. I don't ask to collect names. I feel anyone I would friend is someone I would share a meal and a conversation with. The digital representation of it is really just a formality.
