That is correct. An author always retains the rights to the ownership of their stories.

A mechanism was meant to be put into place to make sure they were on site for 12 months as part of the competition rules (which writers accept when entering).

But even if we devise a system which keeps them on site for 12 months, what happens after that? They disappear, and we are stuck with the same problem.

As has been rightly said above, a 4th place or 5th place being bumped up doesn't sit so well as they weren't originally in the top 3 story judges' selections.

Which leaves us with a minor headache and is the reason it's been left like this, in a far from ideal state.

The only thing to do to make sure the competition story entries stayed on site for all to see, would be to require authors to allow us to publish the stories ad infinitum. Not just for 12 months. They retain the rights to their story, but it doesn't prevent us from keeping them published. They would be free to publish them wherever else they wanted.

If a writer has an issue with the latter, they shouldn't enter competitions here. We give writers exposure to millions of people. Their competition stories would probably not have been written were it not for the competitions being run.

Both writers and the site should benefit from us running competitions. Not one or the other. Generally the relationship is beneficial and works well. But our policy could probably do with a revision.

Please don't get me wrong, I love the comps, and they got me lots more reads and lots of exposure. It gets people excited about writing! And any time stipulation stated up front would be fair, because a writer would know the terms going in.

But I don't think a blank contest win spot is a huge deal, particularly on a site where turnover is high, due to the subject matter of the site. There are several legit reasons for wanting a story taken down. I doubt I would have entered a comp if the conditions were the story could never be removed.

As long as you stipulate the conditions up front, it's fair. But for a site that is centered around writing, I think you should err on the side of being writer friendly.

That said, as long as you stipulate
Just popping in to throw down a shot and buy a round for the house on me (and by me I mean the mysteriodly absent Ping) to celebrate the results of the election, and offer my sympathies to those of you who voted for the Other Guy.

I am SO thankful we got through that election relatively unscathed. I was worried. Actually, my greatest fear--that there would be a terrorist attack on US soil-- scared me so much I was scared to even say it. Scared of riots and out-of-control protests and Trump Trucks. Scared of rampant claims of fraud. And while the White House is making the usual noises about stealing the election, no one seems to be taking them very seriously. They normalized crazy.

So here's to democracy, here's to the US of A, and here's to all the other countries around the world for putting up with our loud obnoxious, over-sized presence.

Let's have a very quiet next four years.

HUGS
Sorry to be contrary, but I think there's a case to be made that the writer should have control of their own material. Stipulating that it has to stay on the site for up to a year is fine. Even five years, if it's stipulated up front. But author's rights should return to the author eventually. Publication rights to the story should not be held in perpetuity by Lush. The writer of the story should be able to do what they like with it.
I pulled a comp winner because I wanted to sell it on Amazon.

I'd offer to put it back, but I imagine the only thing more annoying than someone pulling a comp winner is having to repost a comp winner after it's been pulled.

Not much going on here. Obsessively watching politics. Looks like Biden will claim victory during prime time tonight. It'll be a nice way to start off the weekend. Maybe LJ can provide a distraction from all the crazy. Go out for a nice dinner tonight. Snuggle together as temperatures fall. Read and write. Maybe watch The Americans.

Where the FUCK is .Png!? We need him in these uncertain times.

Ping 2024!

I'll have coffee. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

i gave you those 1s btw as a way to toughen you up for the real world of publishing. if i think you're getting soft again, expect some more low scores and maybe even a scathing comment or two.

Don't taze me, bro.

Seriously, one of the first Shards, maybe even the very first one, had two 1s in the first 5 votes.

Someone, within a few minutes, gave several of my recent Micros a vote of One. If they had mixed votes already, I'd just shrug it off, but they had all fives. I can't imagine what I might have said or done to anyone here, but they've had their revenge and I feel miserable.

Please start pouring whiskies and don't stop, thank you.

Sorry about that, Kistin. Cold comfort, but I got a lot of 1's back in the day (I was writing a series of flash called the Shards, not everyone's cup of tea) and saw each 1 as a badge of honor and a sign I was doing something right. You stirred up a strong reaction with your words. Just not the kind you expected.

I have watched SO MUCH election news in the last three days. Sigh. I think things will be okay. And Fuzzy, I thought democracy acquitted itself very well these last few days, so I wouldn't call it a hot mess either, but we really dodged a bullet. Living through this election was like driving a car with the Check Engine light on, scared it was gonna clunk to a stop at any time. Time to shore up our counting methods, get rid of legal voter intimidation tactics and a lack of voting opportunities in some communities.

Anyway, I'm tired of politics (though I am going over to look at the Think Tank next).

Köffee would be a poem.

Patience seems to be the word of the day. I couldn't believe when I woke up this morning around 200 and watched Trump's speech that he said he won. Of course I wouldn't expect anything less than what we are seeing from him. What I don't understand is his followers and how they hang on to every lie he says. I have family members bashing the whole system and calling the election a fraud. On another note Jersey voted to legalize the green. Wonder how long that will take to come to be. I'll have a beer please and another round for those above. Put them on my tab of course that means Ping's. Hopefully the night is peaceful and we will know tomorrow for sure who won.

That speech was a disgrace. I don't think anyone took it too seriously, because he's done it so many times before.

It's 24 hours later, and I'm here with an empty bowl and an empty snifter, to collect on my bet with sprite. No, we don't know the next President, but we have a pretty good idea who it's going to be. And no roving mobs of crazies from the right or the left on the streets. I would claim that I won the bet, but that wouldn't be the right tone in these devisive times, so I will share my bottle of absinthe and my bag of Sour Diesel with sprite and anyone else who cares to partake.

Peace.

It's not just the counting and all the bullshit trump's going to try to pull, it's that the Repugnicans are going to control the Senate, which means they will block anything that Biden tries to do, then blame him for a lack of results.

It also leaves a lot of states in Repugnican hands, which means, with the census, gerrymandering will become more deeply entrenched, giving the minority control over the majority.

It also means neither DC nor PR will become states.

It's not just the counting…

Not trying to be a Republican apologist, but I think the American people voted in a Republican Senate. That seems clear-ish from last night's results, and while I don't share their politics, I can accept it.

What I can't accept is Trump calling the vote a fraud. Happily, he's been saying this for a year, and no one seems to be paying much attention. Old news, fake news. Count the votes. Trust democracy.

More köffee please.
HUGS

Nothing is decided yet, James and Bill. Chin up! Biden is still likely to win. Trump just said what everyone knew he would say, what he even TOLD US he would say. The bright side is this: there are no crazed mobs from the right or left causing trouble. Despite Trump saying he won, no one took him seriously. And the states are quietly and calmly counting away. Democracy is still intact.

Exhausting night though. I was up til about 2 watching. Went to bed expecting a Trump presidency, and woke up thinking it looks likely for Biden. Let's hope everyone stays frosty.

My state went from purple to a solid blue.

I don't have cable, but I did a two week free trial of youtube.tv so I could get all the cable stations, and I am sure I am going to be flipping between ABC (my fave coverage), CNN, Fox and MSNBC obsessively, all day. As I said earlier, beyond my own partisan interests, this is going to be a really interesting process.

We are watching history.

Where the fuck is .Png?

Köffee would be a victory.

we putting money on this? *continues to sweep up the glass on my office floor*

I'll bet a bowl of purple haze and a dram of absinthe we know the winner in 24 hours, and the result is definitive enough so that very few people go to the streets and behave badly.

See you here at 6 tomorrow. Bowl and cup in hand.

I'd love a few fingers of Bulleit. Pour sprite one too!
Okay. First polls are closing now. I'm knocking off work an hour early and going on a long, mind-clearing walk. Then sit down with the first of what will surely be several bourbons and watch the madness.

A round for the bar on me. See you on the other side of the election.

Everyone stay safe!
They usually go in a direction I don't expect. I'm trying to change that though, and be a better plotter. Right now I waste WAY too much time on stuff that ends up on the cutting room floor (so to speak).
I'd easily choose either. I don't need to make much money at it. Just pay the rent.

If I HAD to choose, I'd go with b. Mostly I want the audience more than the money.

Sex IN tacos! ?

Love is a safe space that allows both of you to present your truest selves to each other.
No donuts!? NO TUNES!? Until we're done with the erection!? That could take DAYS!!!

Extra big HUGS today.

James, I don't do yoga, though you and Scott saying it helps with back pain makes me curious. I do walk nearly every day, and find not only does it help, it's one of my favorite parts of the day. In fact, it a lovely day today, so after work I will take a long walk as the polls close out east.

I predict the day, and the days that follow it, will be less fraught than people are fearing. In a week, democracy will be just fine. Regardless of who wins (I winced a little when I added that part, but it's true).

Not much else going on. Work til 5, walk and write afterward, then sit down with a bottle of bourbon and a bowl and watch the messy, exhilarating process of democracy in action.

Make Verbal Caffeinated Again. Köffee please.
Ha! In a word, yes. smile What a nice perk to growing older.

Team spider here. We live in spider country. Tarantula country even. It'd be silly to do anything but become comrades with them. The only spiders I kill are black widows.

Quiet weekend. Ate lots of candy, had a few trick or treaters, watched a few horror movies. The best was a grisly little thriller called The Lie. LJ said it was like watching Greek tragedy. I concur.

Watched election news obsessively this weekend. Sigh. There is a cold, objective side to me that finds all this fascinating, and keeps me hungry for detail. It's important to remember (for me anyway) that this is not a contest, not us vs. them, it's about the country, and a lot of people's actual, day-to-day lives are affected.

Anyway. Everyone stay safe. It's gonna be a seriously weird week.

I vote for köffee.

Holy shit. You're so fucking funny!

I still need a drink, though. ?

Here you go! A proper cocktail: Sexy in the Playroom. That garnish is cotton candy! Works for me.

I'll have more coffee.

Tonya, your littley reminds me of my youngest - she loved to write stories when she was little and they ALL had talking cats in them.

Looks to be a chill day, and a chill weekend. Order in tonight (it's cold out!), movie and dinner out tomorrow. There's actually a play tomorrow night, from one of our favorite theaters, but I don't know that we will go.

Anyone else exhausted by the election? Not even the worry about whether "your" candidate wins, just the day-to-day ubiquity of it all, the same talking points on both sides, all day all the time, everyone on high alert about what could possibly happen next. 5 more days.

Curves, I have not yet read your latest Tobias story, but I look forward to it. CONGRATS on the richly deserved EP.

Happy birthday Emma! I've never even seen the The Crow, though I had an ex gf who LOVED it. Enjoy!

EDIT: Mandalorian season 2 just dropped, and it has Timothy Elephant in it! We're probably re-up on Disney+ for a month to watch it!

.png, thoughts? Where are you? How are the pups?

Let's get the day started right with a cuppa the big C.
I have not. Maybe when I was a kid.

HYE screamed while seeing something horrific in real life?
HUGS

My daughter turned OFF the heat last night, so I woke up to a 61 degree house. Grrr.

Tonya, Rabies the part-dog, part-man rocks.

Not much going on here. With the election close time has slowed to a crawl. I have my last night of Get Out the Vote calls tonight.

We are gonna try again to go to the movies this weekend. Never made it out last weekend. There's a movie called Synchronic that is horror/sci-fi and involves recreational drugs that mess with the flow of time. How cool is that?

Where is .png?

Koffee would be the exclamation point at the end of my sentence.

No, princess. You sing so much prettier than a canary. *cracks the belt across your cheeks*

Where is my rum? Do you really know, or is this just a ploy to get public spankings? *cracks the belt across your cheeks again*

Oooh. Pinking up nicely.

Sorry, y'all. Sometimes pets need a little positive reenforcement.

*cracks the belt a third time, a little lower* ?

*sizzle*

Thanks for the pastries Fuzz. And thanks all for the Jerry Jeff tunes. HUGS

Having some imposter syndrome with writing lately. I'm not writing well. Between the back pain and the upcoming election and yadayadayada I am feeling kinda discombobulated.

Where .png!?

One last cuppa koffee please.

May I ask a question of more experienced Lushers (Lushites? Lusherandos & -das? Lushies?):

Why is it that sprite seems to start so many of the more popular threads, and why are so many of them about involving the people above or below doing kinky things to each other? Doesn't she have anything better to do with our time?

Just trying to educate myself on proper Lush edicate…

Thanks.

sprite is a sentient piece of computer code that gained consciousness once a critical mass of Lush users was attained, sometime around February 2011. She's literally nothing but 1s and 0s. She's the ghost in the machine, always there, always watching. She never sleeps.

The reason for all that raw kinkiness going on above and below her is that she is able to alter our neuro-programming with mind viruses hidden inside her stories, rewiring our desires, making her the object of all our lust-drenched fantasies, enslaving us with our own dark needs.

A beer would be swell.

I have to be talked into going to nearly any party I attend (though i almost always end up enjoying myself).

HYE been talked into doing something you've regretted?
HUGS

Hey Evie! May I join you for a cup?

Thanks for the sweets and the tunes, Fuzz.

Vanessa, you woke up at 4:20? Seriously? And what did you do immediately upon waking?

Not much going on here. Working 6 hours, taking lotsa breaks to keep the back from barking.

I have a dear friend whose husband has fallen WAY down the Q-Anon conspiracy rabbit hole. She's sad and scared. Understandable, it's sad and scary. I used to talk politics with him all the time: the Clinton years, the Bush years, the Obama years. Now he gets too angry. Weird times, friends.

Rest peacefully, Jerry Jeff.

Köffee would soothe my fevered brow.

Evie is in the mood for mischief. Must be Halloween!

Bill, can you put her Bailey's on my tab?

Getting some writing done at least. And LJ is taking good care of me (heh) while I recover.

Thanks for the well wishes, Curves.

Still snowing. More hot koffee please!
