It absolutely is. A few hundred for a short story (and that is a LOT to get paid for a short story) that takes a week to write is not gonna pay the rent. The few full time writers I know work their asses off, and write ALL THE TIME to make it work. They publish their own stuff, they get picked up by anthologies, they take ghost-writing work, they spend a ton of time on promotion and networking.
As for your earlier question, Duotrope (awesome searchable database, it's how I find places to submit) defines semi-pro as 1-5 cents a word, pro 5 cents a word and up.

I thought they threw too much into the last half of last season, trying to make it a Lost-like puzzle that people will analyze online endlessly. I don't wanna analyze endlessly. I wanna watch a good TV show.
That said, I thought they corrected it the first episode of this season. It was a pretty straightforward episode.
Gill, I don't think Bernard is a hybrid, I just think they've given him back-door access with that DNA line. It was a weird twist though. And let me boast that in last season's thread I called Bernard as being a robot WAY early in the show (and was dissed for my theory by that damn sprite chick).
Violence, even graphic, doesn't bother me. Endlessly long fight scenes bore the FUCK out of me, which is why I hate action movies these days, but WWorld didn't do that.

eBooks aren't the only option. There are quite a few porn magazines/sites out there that buy erotica, a handful offering professional rates (5 cents a word or so). Plus, it's cool to have your stories on actual porn sites/mags, which get a ton of traffic. Just remember Vonnegut got his first stories published by porn mags.
