A change like that shouldn't send the story back to the queue for reverification, so there shouldn't be a problem with flooding the queue.
The old system probably would have worked better for what you're suggesting, because you only ever specified a forward ("Read Next") link. It was replaced because it meant, after publishing a new chapter, you had to go edit the previous chapter the make the link work.
Your suggestion of being able to select a forward and backwards link, and whether they are reciprocal, could be good, but I can't see Gav having time for something like that for a long while.
The story-linking system isn't designed for what you describe. It's really only supposed to be for multi-part stories or series. I understand why authors do that, and I would never stop them, but it's also quite easy to get to a list of their other stories and find another one to read (much easier than the work it would take to implement a different system, which would likely have kinks to be worked out and confuse some authors initially).

A lot of members are reporting issues with the forum today, essentially that it is considering them a "Guest", meaning they cannot post on the forums. It isn't affecting all members, and some have been able to access the forum on a different device.
Gav and Nicola are aware of the issue and hopefully it will be sorted out soon. Thanks to everyone for their patience.
This is also affecting some moderators accessing out private forum, and so there may be some delays with story verification, too.

There's no official size limit, but we ask people to be reasonable and considerate. Large images are particularly problematic for mobile users.
600x900 is probably just on the upper end of acceptable. Oversized images may be removed.
