I'd never even heard of these books, but I can see how this collective misremembering might happen.
You all had these books as kids, and sort of knew the name of the writer. Then as you got older you came across other Germanic names like Wittgenstein and Hammerstein and all of these ended in ...stein, not ...stain. So you subconsciously adjusted your childhood memory to fit your adult experience that "long German-sounding names always end in ...stein".
I can even see how, even when you became a parent and bought the books for your kids, you'd already made the mental adjustment and still "saw" the name as ...stein. The brain makes all sorts of short cuts like this, and sometimes gets it wrong.
