Hello lovely ladies and kind gents.

I found it incredible that 124 stories were combed through to create such a small list in only about one day. What a grand effort. I was assuming it would be at least a week of effor. Great job, Nic.

I'll have a cuppa java, please. It's going to be a hot day so I need to drink my coffee early.

I started on the 1st after it had closed off, so it was more like an easy 2 days.

Even at such few words, you still have to interpret the meaning of the story, let it sit with you for a bit, maybe read it again, write some comments into a spreadsheet, and then think of a number between 1-100 where you think it might sit in the competition.

The average scores act as a guide, but are mostly meaningless when they are all nearly 5. In fact scoring here and most places is largely meaningless. But that's another topic altogether!

Then once the whole process is done, you have to re-read the top section in case a few nagging doubts are in your mind about certain entries.

It's quite the juggling act.

The dartboard technique is so much easier!
I've just finished reading every microfiction competition entry.

My god it was tough to shortlist the 124 down to a Top 20 even. Some "big names" have missed out on being shortlisted …

It's past the 12 o'clock watershed here. Can I have a large glass of Prosecco please barkeep!
We've had 124 entries and the competition is now officially closed.

Let the shortlisting, begin!

Thank you! ☺ SimplyJohn, fine chap that he is, has already been in touch to sort this out. I'll try to keep my fingers under control in future... ?

You and your fingers

I was just reading the latest comp entries, and I accidentally hit the wrong score on one (full confession, my finger slipped and I scored it 1...) No problem, I thought, I'll go up and change it. But although I hit the change button, and put in my intended score, after the page had refreshed the box still shows my original score. ?

Is this a bug In the system?

I'd hate anyone to think I was deliberately trying to scupper the opposition ☹

I can go and change it.

Please let me know which story and I'll make it happen.

Wasn't that at the last Christmas party when the male stripper was waving his dick around?

I was being kind in photoshop!

115 entries so far. That's a new record.
That is, if you want to!

Mine is telling me I yearn for freedom and escape from this god forsaken situation we're all in. Plus I love the colours (adds Turkey to the holiday destination list):

Pity about the carpark in the shot.
I tested it just now and although it hung for a short while, it went through.

Is it a competition piece?

Have you put it in the Microfiction category rather than another (as several people have done before they were moved)?

I'll make Gav aware either way that it's very slow to upload stories so he can look at what's causing the issues.
I'd like to point out to people that the guidance I have given our verifiers, is that their (voluntary, remember!) role is to verify. It isn't to edit stories.

If a story is littered with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, it is bounced, with recommendations and advice. It's as simple as that. I used to stop at the first paragraph if there were more than a couple of errors in it, and send it back without reading any further.

For those who are really struggling and wish to improve, you can take up a Gold Membership which will grant you some editing assistance.

Here are the stats for April, for those who are interested:

Accepted: 701 (76%)
Rejected: 225 (24%)

Total: 926

So 3/4 of all stories are passed first time, without the need to pass them back to authors.

I think that's a pretty good testament to the quality of submissions we receive, and the flexibility / minor editing our verifiers need to do (as necessary).

Thank you to our verification team for all their time and efforts.

Well, If I had known that was how you pick the winners I would have entered a whole lot more of the earlier competitions!

Rofl. Excellent plan.

One entry per person!

By my (potentially wrong as I am very sleepy) reckoning, there are over 100 entries. I am REALLY glad I am not a judge.

Why? We usually just pick the names out of a hat or Sprite uses the drunken dartboard technique (DDT) to choose the winners

Actual footage of her preparing to pick the winners for the last comp:

There's been some great entries.

I'm really enjoying seeing people rise to the challenge.

This might be my favourite banner ever. You did a brilliant job again Liz!

Someone was very busy on his couch in Switzerland in the month of April, verifying over 100 stories.

Thank you so much El Henke for taking the time to go through all those and help keep the lush cogs turning

A big shout out too for the following Mods for each processing over 70 stories for the month too: Curvygalore, Laura, Saucymh, FirstBlush and WSCLG.

Thank you for the communal efforts.

Cheers,

Nicola

P.S. I've always liked the Swiss. For a start, their flag is a big plus (sorry, it's my only Swiss joke ).
Wow, 63 entries in under a week.

This one is going to be a challenge to judge!
Words spoken from the heart are all the more powerful.

Lovely poem Roger
This competition was fierce!

Our shortlister only managed to get it down to a Top 15, it was that tight.

Thank you to everyone who entered. I think this is the first time we've had over 100 entries in a competition.

Congratulations to the winners:

Promises, by Browncoffee
Red Wine Kisses, by Saucymh
Daddy's Girl, by LucaByDesign

Rounding out the top 10:

A Solo Affair, by WannabeWordsmith
Strange World Or I Was A Teenage Dildo, by vanessa26
Mind Fuck, by Wilful
Circumstances, by edgiver83
Where to get off, by Jaymal
Talk to Me, by AylaJ
Talk Dirty to Me (Such a Good Girl), by techgoddess

There were quite a few "big names" missing from this Top 10. It just goes to show how strong the field is these days.

To the winners, I will be in touch shortly.

Thank you to everyone who took part.

Nicola
Our hosting company had an issue which we were not made aware of in advance.

Apologies for the disruption to our service.

Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be.

Side note: The cool-down time limit between casting votes is a little frustrating when reading in the microfiction category. Acceptable and understandable because it's a necessary mitigation measure against voting shenanigans, but still frustrating.

I’ll see if Gav can remove this temporarily.

Hey Nicola, on this thread you say the cut-off date is May 31, but on the competition page, it says May 30.

Which are we going with?

Edit: The course of a day could be 25 entries lol

I’d hoped this was fixed by now.

31st May everywhere is the end date.

My suggestion is get your entries in well before so your entry qualifies for the 10 vote minimum.
To promote our new "Microfiction" category, we are running a quick and dirty short story competition.

It is open to all, established writers and people who might like to publish their first piece here.

Microfiction Competition

The aim of Microfiction (also commonly known as “micro-fiction”) is to tell a complete story within a limited number of words.

Although the word count limit is very restrictive, stories in this category should still adhere to basic story rules of having a beginning, middle and an end.

Competition Theme

For this competition, we want writers to be inspired by the image of the 2 lovers in a poppy field. Other than that, feel free to use your imagination!

As a challenge to writers, stories must be exactly 100 words (using our text editor's word count). They must be submitted to the Microfiction category.

Poems or fantasy stories are not accepted in this competition.

Stories must be exactly 100 words. There's a single prize of $100, and the deadline is May 31.
