For the uneducated (like me): May Day

The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with the Floralia, festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, held April 27 during the Roman Republic era, and with the Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. It is also associated with the Gaelic Beltane, most commonly held on April 30. The day was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian European pagan cultures. While February 1 was the first day of Spring, May 1 was the first day of summer; hence, the summer solstice on June 25 (now June 21) was Midsummer.[citation needed]

As Europe became Christianised, the pagan holidays lost their religious character and May Day changed into a popular secular celebration. A significant celebration of May Day occurs in Germany where it is one of several days on which St. Walburga, credited with bringing Christianity to Germany, is celebrated. The secular versions of May Day, observed in Europe and America, may be best known for their traditions of dancing around the maypole and crowning the Queen of May. Fading in popularity since the late 20th century is the giving of "May baskets," small baskets of sweets or flowers, usually left anonymously on neighbors' doorsteps.[2]

Since the 18th Century, many Roman Catholics have observed May — and May Day — with various May devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary[3] In works of art, school skits, and so forth, Mary's head will often be adorned with flowers in a May crowning. May 1 is also one of two feast days of the Catholic patron saint of workers St Joseph the Worker, a carpenter, husband to Mother Mary, and surrogate father of Jesus.[4] Replacing another feast to St. Joseph, this date was chosen by the Pope Pius XII in 1955 to create as a counterpoint to the Communist International Workers Day celebrations on May Day.[4]

Beginning in the late 20th century, many neopagans began reconstructing traditions and celebrating May Day as a pagan religious festival.
This is a story site. We need a story told, so we can pass comment on your bitch factor!

I was just about to write a post about EXIF tags, lol. Thanks for saving me a job.

Love the photo! Very dramatic clouds.

It was a shame, the sun went in about 5 minutes before I spotted the field. This area of East Anglia has a lot of "field mustard" (rapeseed), used to produce canola oil. It's not so great for bees.

Hopefully the link above helps our troubled image posters.
This might help: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/digitalphotography/f/sideways-pictures.htm Something about the software you're using, not recognising the orientation tags used on iPhones and the like (including certain Microsoft products).

I've asked Gav if he's changed anything our side. The software here simply uploads what you put in. It may look vertical in your viewer, but that's not how computers read the information given!

Test straight off my iPhone of the lovely English countryside (I was using the phone upright):

Hi,

Our Premium Membership Model was introduced earlier this year. It was implemented to help cover the increasing costs of our dedicated servers, backups and data storage facilities.

We deemed the fairest system to be based on restricting access to site features which use up the most resources ($), in terms of processing power and / or storage. Messaging / chat / image uploading, are high on this list.

We have been looking at ways to improve the structure of the model over the last few months, and have decided to make a change to the set up in relation to the messaging restrictions.

As it stands, new members have a 3 month trial, after which time, they will need to switch to a paying membership (less than $1 per month) if they wish to continue using all the site features. This includes the private messaging and IM chat.

This is also the case for all members registered prior to 1 Jan 2015, who were given a 6 month grace period (which ends 30 June 2015).

The way it is set up now, once a member's trial membership ends, they can no longer message anyone. Nor can a paying member, contact them.

I believe a fairer system is to have it so that if at either end of the message is a Premium Member (Bronze, Silver or Gold), then the messaging restriction is lifted.

That means a paying member, can effectively contact anyone, regardless of their membership status.

This will be coded and operational, within the next week or so.

Thank you for all your feedback on this. It may result in fewer signups, but I'd rather our community continue to be happy and supportive of all our site's efforts.

Regards,

Nicola
I am delighted with the huge success of this competition. There were some fantastic entries, which really nailed the brief.

On a personal note, it was wonderful seeing some of the "old guard" writing and entering the competitions again, including DamonX, Smiler77 and Jaymal.

Congratulations to our Winners:

Winner ($200 Prize) - Little Perversions, by Dancing_Doll
Second Place ($125 Prize) - Neon Nights, by SITTING
Third Place ($75) - Laney Scoops the City, by Jaymal

Honourable mentions to these excellent stories, which made up the Top 10:

Skittles, by sprite
The Audition, by Buz
The Journey of Mrs. Small, by angieseroticpen
Politics, by Delphi
Sex Extreme, by BradLee
Insatiable, by DamonX
A Scarred Wonderland, by MadMartigan

A huge thank you to all who took part. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the entries.

I will be in touch with the winners in the next day or so.

Cheers,

Nicola

That's too bad. I always enjoyed the songs. I loved picking them out for my page and enjoyed them on other people's pages.

Darn....

I've always browsed members' YouTube selections rather than the playlists. With the amount of music on YT, it was effectively doubling up the music listings anyway having both.
Hi HeraTeleia.

I appreciate the inconvenience the new setup may cause.

We are looking into what may work out to be a "fairer" system. The last thing we want is for supportive members to lose their love for the site.

What is being discussed currently, is changing it so that provided one member has a paid membership (after their trial ends), then the PM / chat between the 2, will be unrestricted. However, 2 free members who are out of their trial period, would be unable to contact each other. It's an option.

You have to remember, that most pay sites, charge you for access to anything, right from the off. A dating site for example, would typically charge $20-$30 per month. Fetlife charge $60 p.a. for membership, which you need to pay or you can't access the majority of the site's content at all.

It's unfortunate that we have had to go this route, however we cannot continue as a totally free site any longer. Running a site for 2.5 million monthly unique visitors, costs an awful lot. Our server costs are escalating, and if it were not for the additional income from our mobile site, we would be barely breaking even.

I'll keep you up to date on where we are with this over the coming weeks.

Thank you for the feedback, it's most appreciated.

Nicola
It looks like the decision has been made for us:

"I agree. Let's pull play lists altogether. I can't see there being another free (legal) service like that as a replacement. Besides, they never supported SSL which meant every profile page reported security errors."

The profile template will be changed in the next few days, accordingly.
I'm sure Gav will find another solution

I am not a big fan of auto-starting profile music, it's so 2008 "myspace"

It makes me wonder if we should remove the playlists totally, considering the copyright implications.
It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to be that prolific.

Congratulations on reaching that milestone.

Best of luck with your stories Jonathan.
Megan contacted us, they have my blessing to post here.

They own this site and several others, to give you an idea of the content of the stories they will be looking for: http://www.puffynetwork.com.
He has power back on. The aircon and a few other electronic items were fried from the sounds of it.

They are all well, so that's the main thing.

Normal service shall resume shortly!
Gav sent a short message earlier saying he's fine. Power has been restored to his suburb.

Normal lush service to be resumed shortly.
I've not heard from Gav since Friday. I suspect the power is still out in his area where the cyclone hit.

Competition results will be delayed as I don't yet have the full list of entries / scores etc myself. I will post a new expected announcement date for the winners, when I know.
I've not heard from him since Friday.

I'll need to post something in the comp thread, as the results will be delayed.
I've just received an email from Gav, saying he'll be without electricity until at least the weekend. He was in his car using his mobile to message me.

I had no idea, but apparently where he is, a few hours north of Sydney, they've been hit by a Category 2 Cyclone. 70,000 people are without power. He's trying to get hold of a portable generator.

All his family are fine, but there's a lot of tree and building damage in his area, roads closed etc.

Please bear this in mind when messaging about site related tech issues!
Apologies for any confusion. I said "a few days" on the 21st, which included the 21st and 22nd (a few means 2 ). I'm pretty sure the 22nd was the deadline date.

People leaving it to the last minute, are very unlikely to garner enough votes to qualify for the competition anyway. I really wouldn't advise leaving it right to the death.

Hello. I haven't purchased anything online from another country; lush membership might just be the first. I'm concerned about international tax rates. Before the purchase becomes final, are we are given a detailed breakdown of what we're about to buy, and will there be a cancel button or such device? It would be easier to ask tax rates for a specific country but I'm not comfortable asking here. Thanks.

We use the second largest payment processor in the world. You do not get a detailed breakdown as there are no taxes passed on. All that appears on your credit card bill is a one off amount, billed discreetly via our site admin's software company.

I wish it wasn't where we'd have to pay. I won't be able to. That sucks but I'm glad lush has grown so much. I do love lush.

So we won't be able to send any messeges to people whatsoever, am I correct?

Correct. After your 3 month trial is up (or if you were a member before the start of 2015, after 1 July 2015), you will no longer be able to use the messaging system. It's one of the most resource intensive applications on here.

Paying the $10 yearly Bronze Membership fee (less than $1 per month), unlocks the messaging system.
Happy Birthday Mazza.

I hope you have a wonderful day being spoiled rotten.

Only 2 more days until the deadline.

People, you'd best get your entries in today, if you want them to qualify with a large enough # votes.

Good luck stragglers!

All stories have now been tweeted to our 3000+ followers.

I know you know that if its Aussie Council Workers it's going to take them 5 years. For one hole. Gav really should have reached out internationally for that job.

I moved back to England late last year, for a variety of reasons.

Council workers here come in a 3 pack. 1 to do the work, 2 to look on. It's always been that way the world over hasn't it?

It might be nice to have some sort of "Affinity Group" feature, where members who wanted to have something like a private forum would have the opportunity to form subgroups. This might work like Google Circles or Groups, one or more moderators and a private forum that those moderators/members could control access to.

This has been in the works a long long time.

It is an enormous coding job to create a "Groups" feature, but it is being worked on as a priority.

There are a lot of people here with similar interests, but without a method for them to connect easily, it doesn't happen. It should, and will.
