We've closed hundreds of this boring idiot's accounts. When we do so, we remove their votes too.

Normal members who close their accounts, their votes remain.

Does he use a different password and email address when setting these new accounts up? It might be an easy way of keeping tabs on him. Geolocating whatever IP he's using could help though it's not very accurate

My votes haven't changed. I almost feel as if I've been missing out
If you're just out of a long-term relationship it's likely that all you're looking for is casual sex. You're drawn back to her because you know she's an easy lay and your options are limited. She doesn't understand you because you say don't want a relationship with her but then you keep on ending up in bed together.

Hard as it may seem, you need to stop thinking with your dick because at the moment you're falling into a relationship out of nothing more than laziness. You will not be able to do this without hurting her feelings - life is tough, she'll get over it. You'll look like an asshole, you'll get over that too.
I know someone who commits this profile crime on her very popular page - I won't name names but her initials are DD

Trying to retro fit these kind of limits is always going to be hard *sigh*

Reducing the amount of activity displayed isn’t going to help. In order to show the most recent activity we need to aggregate the activity of ALL friends then slice the top records.

Perhaps 200 was a little optimistic  Maybe a cap that would not affect any of our current users but would at least give an upper bounds and deterministic performance. I think 1000 is reasonable.

I bet there isn’t a social site out there that has unlimited friends. Facebook has 5,000 but they have 180k servers and thousands of programmers

I think people would be happier to forego a full aggregated activity feed to keep the opportunity of an unlimited friends list.

A different option could be to adopt the List function of twitter - allowing you to see the activity of a selection of people rather than the full list. You could then allow users to select what information they wanted on that list and who was on on it - you could limit that to as few as 20 friends and I don't think you'd get many complaints. The system could just mirror the current Story Follows utility.

Yes, I can see how the full activity feed does give a "social networky" feel to the site but essentially the site is still an online community with a slight flavouring of social network. When you open up the Lush API it might get more interesting ;)

Out of interest, just have far have you jumped into NoSQL?

I mostly check out my "what you've missed" page, that's my favourite just now.

I'd imagine that's exactly where gav's problems are coming from hence why it was down for about a week.

Iterating though hundreds of non-indexed select queries chews up server time. Maybe it would help if there was a way of "hibernating" inactive accounts so that activity lists only bother checking active accounts.

I'd also imagine the forum replies facility on the timeline slows things down more than anything else
Visiting other people's profiles can really eat into your data. Serial gif posters will clog up people profile comments - some of them posting up to a dozen 0.5 to 1Mb gifs in one single post. with 20 posts visible on a page that soon adds up.

I've seen people on here with profile page weights in excess of 20Mb. Blocking any content from tumblr will drastically reduce the amount of bandwidth you use. I seem to remember there being a firefox plugin as well that blocks animated gifs, so that might be a help too.

Having Grooveshark play automatically when you visit your profile is just downright rude IMO. I wish there was a setting on here to block it completely.
While 800 might not sound a lot compared to 200,000 users, that would be a lot of your most regular users. I can see how this might make a few people jittery.

70% of people with the socialite badge were active in the last month - that's a massive retention factor. It compares to just under 10% of all users being active in the last month

Instead of capping the number of friends why not limit access to the activity feed to those with less than 200 friends. The more friends you have the more meaningless it becomes any way.

Alternatively, reduce the activity feed to one month or maybe make the ability to have +100 friends purely a perk for Gold members.

No, I have to click the okay button. I don't like them popping open on their own. Nor have I used a chatbox in forever.

Ok, it might just be worth checking your settings in Chrome all the same - nothing on any site should need to pop up without you asking it to

Edit: If you haven't already, I'd shut off Java to Chrome as well. It's pretty much redundant these days as far as the web is concerned and causes more trouble than anything useful. (note: Java, not javascript - that's pretty essential)

Google Chrome, it's the only one I like. I've never had an issue before, just this past week or so.

I use Chrome too but no problems for me - have you allowed chatboxes from your friends on Lush to open automatically? (it'll be on your lush settings)

Go to settings (one of the options on the drop down from the little three bars on the top right corner of Chrome). Then under "Privacy" click "content settings". Scroll down until you get to Pop-ups and select "Do not allow any Pop-ups"

No, I haven't gotten any Malware warnings, I'm just getting stupid popups. It happens like once a day, for the last week or so. I've run my virus scan many times, nothing comes up. A friend of mine is having the same issue as well. Neither of us knows what it is.

It's probably down to people hot-linking crappy animated gifs from spam sites on to people's profiles.

What browser are you using?
It is an interesting fact that amongst women on Lush, those who are over 34 are FOUR times more likely to be interested in "Wife Lover" stories than those who are under 24.

This would suggest that opinions on the morality of cheating change as people get older. It's not just hair that turns grey, your opinions do too.

Hold your damn horses.....are you calling us chickens and cats....that is just wrong

We may have pussys and some maybe called Kitten, but cats.

And most of us can eat chickens for breakfast.

So be nice.......

Would you care for some cock?

Could it be edited to be a poll by Tex?

True - he could also change the title to "Which one of the Village People do you fancy?"

Shame this isn't a poll but I'll be fascinated to see the responses - how women choose long and short term partners.

Cop - Pro: position of authority - Con: conformist and unbending
Fireman - Pro: fulfils basic masculine protector role - Con: lack of ambition, probably alcoholic
Lawyer - Pro: Rich - Con: Arsehole
Doctor - Pro: Respected - Con: Spends all day with his fingers up someone else's arse
Construction worker - Pro: Bit like your Dad - Con: Bit like your Dad
Teacher - Pro: Wants to help you grow - Con: Hangs around with young girls all day

Its just, to set up a scavenger hunt.

I don't expect all subs to comply. I am aware how it works. Relax.

Trying to get people more active.

A "scavenger hunt"? You really aren't aware how it works at all.

They seem to bore me, for the most part. Just don't find that style exciting.

That's because they tell you how you're meant to think and feel: no challenge, no imagination, no discovery, no excitement
There are plenty of second person stories here and, by and large, they're awful.

One of the mantras of creative writing is "show, don't tell". Second person stories are all tell and no show.
Personally I'd ask myself just when my life suddenly became a teenage soap opera.

Two weeks into a relationship? This isn't an ultimatum, it's ground rules. You're still in the cooling-off period at two weeks; either side should be able to say "I'm not sticking around if I have to deal with this shit".

If she'd put up with it for two YEARS and then kicked up a stink, then yes - it would be an ultimatum and would be symptomatic of some more deep-rooted problems. In all these types of scenarios it's worthwhile swapping the genders of the protagonists and seeing if you come to the same conclusions (it removes the distractions of "pussy-whipping").

Does it even count as a relationship after two weeks?

That's what I am actually. I've taken that test a bunch of times and it's always the protector. It's INFJ though not ISFJ

What do you base this theory on? I'm not like what this poem describes really.

And I believe it is lower than 10%. It is the rarest personality type. INFJ is like 1%. If you mean the protector personality.

According to Keirsey.com ISFJ relates to the "Guardian" type "Protector" - link: http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/protector.asp

INFJ would correlate to the Keirsey "Idealist" role of "Counsellor", who as you say make up a much smaller percentage of the population (1-3%) - http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/counselor.asp

I based my evaluation of the man in the poem being an ISFJ on how he is described. The description paints a circumspect individual, so Introvert (I) rather an Extrovert (E). From the first line sensitivity and empathy are seen as key personality factors these would steer towards Sensing (S) and Feeling (F) as opposed to the more objective Intuition (N) and Thinking (T) traits. The last one is a bit more a guess but I'd say the more focussed and planned aspects of Judging (J) are more apt than the improvised aspects of Perceiving (P).
It that poem was a personality test the man in question would come out as a "Protector" or ISFJ - they make up about 10% of the population:

Protectors have an extraordinary sense of loyalty and responsibility in their makeup, and seem fulfilled in the degree they can shield others from the dirt and dangers of the world. Speculating and experimenting do not intrigue Protectors, who prefer to make do with time-honored and time-tested products and procedures rather than change to new. At work Protectors are seldom happy in situations where the rules are constantly changing, or where long-established ways of doing things are not respected. For their part, Protectors value tradition, both in the culture and in their family. Protectors believe deeply in the stability of social ranking conferred by birth, titles, offices, and credentials. And they cherish family history and enjoy caring for family property, from houses to heirlooms.

Wanting to be of service to others, Protectors find great satisfaction in assisting the downtrodden, and can deal with disability and neediness in others better than any other type. They are not as outgoing and talkative as the Provider Guardians [ESFJs], and their shyness is often misjudged as stiffness, even coldness, when in truth Protectors are warm-hearted and sympathetic, giving happily of themselves to those in need.

Their reserve ought really to be seen as an expression of their sincerity and seriousness of purpose. The most diligent of all the types, Protectors are willing to work long, hard hours quietly doing all the thankless jobs that others manage to avoid. Protectors are quite happy working alone; in fact, in positions of authority they may try to do everything themselves rather than direct others to get the job done. Thoroughness and frugality are also virtues for them. When Protectors undertake a task, they will complete it if humanly possible.

For the record I usually come out as an ENTP - about as far away as you can get from that.
