How does that affect me?

It probably doesn't affect your user experience at all - it might even improve it considering that any adverts you see might be more tailored to what you're actually interested in. There is a concern that there could be a darker side to all this data collection and cross matching. What if advertisers knew that you shop more when you're status updates are negative messages?

No need for the hat smarty pants. I haven't been hit by spam or an increase in advertising. Never had spam on my phone either.

Spam doesn't earn you money. Targeted marketing does.

On it's own it doesn't really offer much - but when online marketers cross-match their databases with facebook's using your telephone number (the one you probably give out every time you order something online) the resulting dataset offers a huge amount of information on your shopping and other online habits. All those things you like on Facebook suddenly get associated with those things you bought on amazon.

You could use ad blockers or get the silver membership to get rid of all the ads.

I got gold to do exactly that.

Everything else is a bonus.

Membership perks don't help when you're logged out.

I am having a difficult time seeing the difference between Flash Erotica and Quickie Sex.

Erotica does not necessarily equal sex.

I've written two FE stories for Lush. For me FE is more about a piece of prose than a story in the traditional sense. Though I'm sure given its loose definition here, other people adopt a different approach.

I like the genre for writing. If I write anything more for Lush it'll probably be in this category

I don't usually contribute to the Forum but I would like to thank the contributors to this thread for explaining the issues surrounding this subject.

I recently received a vitriolic message from a writer because I gave one of their stories a 3 and failed to leave a comment. I have to accept that the lack of comment was an error on my part but among the torrents of abuse the score was referred to as "low" which surprised me. They then told me not to bother replying because they had blocked me (whatever that means).

It is all a lot clearer now. Thank you.

From where I sit as a very low level Lush member, an option to comment and "Like" would be perfect. Because my intention is not to anger writers, I now only score if I'm going to give it a 5, a comment with no score just means I would have scored it lower. That is actually a comment and a Like if you want to think of it in that way.

It's a little disheartening to see that someone who's been here over 3 years, commented on over 50 stories and voted on more than 100 should feel in any way as a "low level Lush member". Can you imagine what sort of message you'd have received if you had left a message saying "Average at best".

I hope this lack of self-awareness is just a small minority of authors - though I can imagine they would be a very vocal minority. Scores and comments should be as individual as the people who give them

When I look at my friends online I don't need to see the 4 pictures they post. I would like to see a consolidated list with their name and avatar and their mood.

That option is already in your settings:

Does this mean I have Malware on my Shiny?!

I deleted the thingy without opening it last night. If the people who made that crap spent more time on here learning about sex, they might actually get some, instead of being complete bastards. I don't know what to do. Not about the sex, I mean. The malware.

I'm no expert on Android devices but as you deleted it before installation then you should be fine.

Given the amount of "hot moms" they appear to have who are gagging for a shagging, I'm surprised they can find the time or energy to write malicious software

That doesn't look good at all - fxy3lady.apk is, unsurprisingly, malware http://www.avgthreatlabs.com/android-app-reports/app/fxy3lady.apk/

In Chrome on iOS clicking anywhere on the homepage opens up another browser window but also a scare-ware alert from alert-sa.com saying that a virus has supposedly been downloaded. Closing Chrome fully gets rid of this alert (I'm certainly not clicking OK on the alert). After that the site performs normally.

Perhaps the score could be included with the comment. In this way the comment would explain the score given.
Being given a low score without a comment leaves one wondering if there is an ulterior motive for the low score.

Strange how no one suspects an ulterior motive behind high scores ;)

I know you CAN access it from phones, but a mobile optimized site would be much better. Chat rooms, private chat, even messaging isn't very good on the full site function.

I don't know about android but black-boxing works "ok" on iOS though scrolling and closing individual boxes can prove fiddly

Maybe Chat rooms and private chat could be helped with a few extra lines in the CSS
@media screen and (max-width: 480px) {
body {
insert mobile specific formatting here
}
}
Most social networks are desperate to get your mobile number on their records - it helps them sell your information for $$$. Every time they ask you to verify who you are they get more and more marketable info about you

Would you like one of my tin foil hats?

Are we not applying our personal standards to another author's work? I was always taught that if u can't say something good, best to bite tongue. Just because I think it is below par might not reflect the general informed feeling. So I guess I would answer 'ignore it'. Perhaps a private comment if u care enough. How many Lush Members are truly capable of judging a writer based on literary quality?

A friend of mine recently wrote a story here that in my opinion was dull, overly-drawn out and basically average. It's a Recommended Read has dozens of 5 votes and just as many effusively praising comments. Should I criticise it? Even privately? What would it achieve? I know she's tough enough to take what I say at face value and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't drop me because of it but why put myself through that. Being in the minority though doesn't make you wrong.

To answer your question the RR system is there to do just that. The mods are meant to be of a decent level and therefore capable of knowing of what's good or bad. The only danger is that it encourages a writing bubble where certain writing styles will take over at the expense of things that are perhaps less "Lush".

I personally think poems need to be removed from the RRs - or maybe better separated (RPs?) - they make up more the half of the recommendations here but we all know the vast majority of people do not come here to read poems. Why are poems being promoted when so few want to read them?
Agreed, it's very annoying

Even worse, it occasionally chucks up a javascript alert message to tell me a virus has been detected on my phone and that I should click OK. I know ad revenue is very important for Lush but do we need to sink to this level?

How about improved mobile setup? I realize chat is probably a long way off on the mobile page, but can we at least start off with being able to log in on the mobile page? That way we could at least see what friends may be online and message them, or be able to add stories we find on there to our favorites.

Because I really need an excuse to spend more time on here than I already do... :P

If you scroll to the bottom of the mobile home page*you have the option to click on to the full site, you'll then see the regular desktop version which you can log on to and is perfectly fine for checking your mailbox, sending messages, favouriting etc.

You can chat on there but it can be a bit fiddly

*currently there's an annoying ad that scrolls up and covers these links - this really needs to be got rid of

I highlighted a few things here, that should be noted. Not trying to be snarky, but really, I know what my mods do and what i do here. I know that some of them spend as much time modding as some people put into working. i know that some of us are on call beyond the job of simply modding stories. fyi, another thing that is getting thrown around is a 'get to know your mods' interview thread - so you can get to know some of the people behind the scenes and get a feel for what it is like to be a mod - yes, there are times when i know some of us come off as cranky or snarky, and we really should be more careful about that, but you also have to understand that, when you put a lot of effort into helping people and they some off as ungrateful - and please, i am not pointing fingers, that's a general comment - it's human nature to get a little cranky.

I love what i do - everyone on the team is pretty much on the same page, but it is hard work, it's not at all fun and games, and it does wear on you at times. for example, i'm a story mod - that's my job here. i am sure you probably have a good idea about how often i put on a different hat and deal with issues in the forum, or personal issues, etc. my 'fun time' at lush is a very small window of how much time i actually spend here, and even when i am having fun, i usually have several tabs open where i am 'working'. that's changed, recently, since i have taken a break to further my education, ie, i'm going to college full time and not doing any work *snorts, rolls eyes* here. smile

I don't think the appreciation of what mods do is in question but we should all be allowed to question the system and have things open to public debate. I do appreciate this isn't always possible though.

It does appear to me sometimes that some mods imagine a conspiracy where non-mods get together to co-ordinate attacks against the system. If this was the case I really hope I'd know about it. Unlike the mods we don't have a private forum in which we can get our ducks in a row like that. When people speak out, they're often a lone voice. When they get support from others it's not because they're shaping opinion, it's because they're voicing concerns people already have.

Everyone has to be aware that not all criticism of Lush is automatically wrong as much as all praise of Lush is not automatically right.
I've scored a grand total of three stories in the past two years - all fives - purely, as seeker4 mentioned, as a "like". The scoring system here is broken but as Trinket says, some people love it despite its obvious flaws.

When you put something up for public consumption you have to put up with the fact that people are often clueless. You will get people giving a low score to a Flash Erotica story because it's "too short". There's also a lot of baffling popular stuff here. Weak, terrible stuff that people can't seem to get enough of. There really is no accounting for taste; scores, views and comments offer no true reflection of writing quality. Poems are even tougher to score with any degree of honesty. How are you meant to vote on someone's anguish? 3/5 could sob harder? No wonder they just rack up the 5s.

Being able to work out who has voted on your story has just made things worse.

My lowest scored stories are the ones I've done for competitions. At first I was deluded and conceited enough to imagine that this was because petty types had voted me down to improve their own story's position in the competition. Now however I'm of the opinion that these stories are the most honestly reviewed stories I've done. That month or so where even your best friends can give you a completely anonymous score allows a much needed variety to scoring - maybe that's the way ahead.

2) Make sure your equipment is suitable. The proper condition for dick photos is clean and dry (seriously, ewww), fully erect, and with well-groomed pubes. If it can stay fully erect without you death-gripping it around the base, so much the better.

(I admit here I don't know exactly how these things work. Is it uncomfortable to let an erect dick flop around freely? Or is the grip necessary to keep it at full hardness? Or does the grip just keep it pointed at a more impressive angle?)

This is actually one of many tactics used to make ones dick look longer - make it look like you've got your whole fist wrapped around it when in reality it's just your thumb.

That's pretty harsh, considering it's being put up here to warn others. These scammers are professionals and can spin a damn convincing story. They've come a long way since the Nigerian bank scam routine. You don't have to be "stupid" to fall for them, just human.

I'm sure it was put with all the best intentions however the post has moved away from the original story.

Yes we all should be vigilant of this sort of thing but what we don't need is facts to become urban legends - which this is on the way to becoming.

The individual who used this scam was caught back in 2008. Sure, similar scams are capable of happening but there are far easier ways to skim a card than making up a gift basket.

I've read the whole works of Sherlock Holmes more than once, but there are some bits I don't get. Like in the Valley of Fear. Sherlock Holmes is discussing a secret code with Dr Watson and it refers to a page number in a book:

"Hardly that, Watson. You will, I am sure, agree with me that if the page be given, the number of the chapter is immaterial. Also that if page 534 finds us only in the second chapter, the length of the first one must have been really intolerable."

See, what I don't get. How can they think the first chapter was really long just cos page 534 was in chapter 2? What if chapter 1 was short and chapter 2 was really long?

I have some more questions too.

Danielle xx

Sadly, Arthur Conan Doyle wasn't as clever as Sherlock Holmes
Not exactly the latest scam. This one dates back to one incident in Sydney in 2008. As usual the places and currency have been changed to suit the region.

Snopes (where else)
I'm firm believer in the adage that funerals are for the living.

If you're afraid of expressing your true feelings, then maybe you're not ready to; these aren't things that happily fall within deadlines. Even if you're not 100% reconciled to events, honesty to yourself will go a long way to ease the process for yourself and others.

You shouldn't feel pressured into doing this though. You can write a letter to her any time you wish and no one ever need see it, if that's how you want to do it. On the other hand, if you feel that you risk missing a chance to have some kind of closure then you should do it.

No one listening will have any expectations of you. The main thing is that you come away from the experience positively.

Chelsea??? You want to try further north if you want atmosphere.

Actually, if I was to suggest anywhere in London for a tourist to go to see a football game it would be Fulham. About a mile or so away from Chelsea but a much nicer stadium, a much better atmosphere and situated right on the Thames. A slightly different option would to get themselves down to the Stoop to watch 'Quins
The big sights are just the backdrop of London - there are loads of museums and art galleries.

Yes, London can be very expensive but you don't have to break the bank on a trip. Get a travelcard - it's valid on the underground, the buses and the trains (up to about 12 miles out from the centre) - good value on its own but even better as it can get two for one entry on a huge list of attractions. The travelcard can also get you a reduced fare on the riverbus which is a great way of seeing London.

Of course the best way to see London is on foot but if you want a cheap tour, hop on the number 23 bus at Liverpool street. On its way to Marble Arch it goes past the Bank of England, St Paul's, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Selfridges - you can even stay on it to go to Portobello Road Market
Very minor change but would certainly improve my lush experience.

When using any of the forms on here could we have it so that the URL input field doesn't helpfully start us off with "http://" - it just creates more work!

Copying a link always includes the protocol so I end spending more time deleting the auto entered bit.

Thanks

To what end?

Is this a problem you think is rife among lushers or are you just trying to find like-minded people?
