How we spent our yesterday (for those who only hear the negative things about Seattle).
Thousands of volunteers across Seattle rolled up their sleeves and picked up a paintbrush or a broom Saturday.
Volunteers and partners responded to more than 125 events citywide from Lake City to Rainier Valley.
Itās part of the first-ever One Seattle Day of Service and Mayor Bruce Harrell's plan for people to help give back to the community.
Nearly 4,000 people signed up to help out.
Supporters say they were taking action and making a difference in their community.
On this one day, volunteers all across Seattle were focused on one thing--making the Emerald City a better place.
āIām going to start crying because it's emotional to see these old buildings getting tagged. Itās sad,ā said Nancie Weston. Weston and her team from PuroClean Northwest were among the thousands of people who donated their time and efforts to One Seattle Day of Service.
āI love it. We wanted an opportunity to try to help. So here it is. It was perfect timing,ā said Weston.
In Pioneer Square, as many as 200 volunteers turned out to do all sorts of projects.
āThereās been graffiti that has been removed. We did storm drain stenciling, litter pickup, lots of planting, and weeding to the medians and the green spaces,ā said Chris Woodward with Alliance for Pioneer Square.
easy enough to organize on a smaller scale too. half a dozen people, with a little organization, could put in a 4-6 hours once a month or so to help clean up the community you live in. something to think about.
on a personal note, i doubt i'm doing the competition (again). just not finding time or inspiration to write these days. not that i don't want to, so one day, when the bug hits - besides, i have a few series that i really would like to finish so starting something new, even a one-off, seems a little wrong. work tends to just eat my time and energy these days.
