Just imagine if the roles were reversed,
And I hurt you when you were vulnerable.
Instead of giving you closure,
I decided to ignore you.
Imagine if I disappeared,
Only to return with the one who hurt me,
The one I told you all about,
The one I swore I wouldn’t go back to.
Just imagine if I took your fears
And used them just to hurt you,
Especially when I knew the pain
Would damage you forever.
Imagine if I made you question
Every decision you made,
And left you wondering
Whether carrying on was simply too much.
Imagine you hit rock bottom,
And you called me looking for help.
Imagine the hurt and pain you’d feel
If I told you to fuck off.
Imagine it was my birthday,
And you bought me my favourite things.
Instead of saying thank you,
I questioned your behaviour.
Just imagine you spent hours,
Pouring your thoughts onto paper,
Knowing that I would ignore them
And threaten you with action.
Just imagine I did one of those things—
That wouldn’t be particularly nice.
But how would you feel if I did all of them,
And you still wanted to be part of my life?
Just imagine I did all of this,
And had the gall to block you.
Imagine, after everything,
I still saw myself as the victim.
Just imagine you loved me so much
That giving up was never an option.
But instead of embracing that love,
I rejected it with all my heart.
Just imagine how you’d feel
If I ignored you all the time.
Instead of being civil with you,
I craved other people’s attention.
Imagine you wrote this poem,
And I could see myself in your words.
A decent person would feel ashamed,
But I’d just go about my day.
Just imagine if I reached out,
The happiness that would bring.
Even if not together,
A friendship would suffice.
Now remember…
It wasn’t me who did those things.
You made those decisions.
Every one of them
Was yours.
