the love that slays me

Author's Notes

"After the wreckage of my earlier piece, ‘Colliding Hearts,’ this poem charts a devastating separation across seven stanzas—from unbearable winter absence to the day the lovers fell back into each other: deeper, inevitable, whole."

Oh, winter days without you—
no warmth in your embrace,
empty seas that hold your echo,
ghostly mirrors that frame your face.

I drown in the love that slays me.

I beg the night: take my breath—
if only to taste our tender moments again,
even our last,
that stung by death.

I want you back.
Bring back my beloved friend.
I need you back—
may I live
in your love
again.

Your winter days without me—
no warmth in my embrace,
empty seas that hold my echo,
ghostly mirrors that frame my face.

Lo, the day came.
You forgave me—
forsook safe harbors to land,
sailed lonely seas to claim me,
never turning back again.

You want me back,
you need me back—
bring back your beloved friend.
I want you back,
I need you back—
may we live
in love
again.
