There's more than anatomy between us,
there are spaces both microscopic and vast,
inches and inlets that were once whole
but have cracked to drift apart and become
jagged continents unknown to one another.

The equivalent of vanished civilizations 
will remain buried in our hearts,
carvings on walls that only we can read, 
to others it will all be a mystery,
a short history encapsulated, 
artifacts not meant to be understood, 
as brief as the gust of air from a fluttering wing.

Because the touchstones 
we share are countless, 
the totems all humming with 
memory's unique contained energies.

I can graze along each one and summon 
what pieces of ourselves we surrendered.

When I touched you as no one ever will.

The edge of a sheet covering 
the bed you held me in, 
a soundtrack of mutual breath,
lulled to sleep by the gentle tap 
of your pulse singing against my skin.
moonlight softly reaching in to show 
every glow love flickered through your eyes,

The sound of hot water raining,
covering you hot misty plumes
inhaling the sweet fragrance
of shampoo and your entire body
within the shower's steamy womb.

There's more than broken things between us,
there are cracks minute and wide,
handwritten letters and beloved trinkets,
remnants blindly shifting through time,
jagged pasts that may seal together again.

And if they do I'll know we've never 
vanished from each other's hearts,
the maps we left twist and wind
like the mysterious grooves of fingerprints.

Each line is a touchstone for you
to find the unique energy of,
the memory contained within 
when you meet and trace along me.
