What is with all the haters here

I write some of the hottest erotica on the web. I'm not the best, but I'm not the worst. My stories on another site all have a "HOT" stamp on them because they rate so high. But here, I get a lot of 5 stars then some shithead comes along and votes a 1 or a 2 out of the blue. First, my stories are well written and grammatically correct. That alone should count for half of the rating. If you don't like the topic then don't read it. If you hate that my stories are rating higher than yours then too bad. Learn how to tell a story better.

You aren't the only one hit with down votes. To me, nothing warrants a '1' or '2' or it shouldn't have passed mods. Different readers have different reasons behind scoring. Some do NOT take into account writing technique, grammar, just whether they liked story. And we all know not everyone will like our content. I understand your feelings!

I read the two you've posted so far.

You will always get some negative responses to incest stories.
Maybe in future chapters it will but, as a stand-alone submission, the cuckold story did not deliver cuckoldry.

Everybody's stories are grammatically correct here. Lush has probably the most rigorous review process of any story site. The mods rarely let poor grammar slip through. You don't get points for that.

Well about the cuckold story. That is a very long story. I will be dressing Andrea up and taking her to meet her date at the Sheraton Hotel. They will seduce each other then he will fuck her and collar her as a BBC Slut in front of me in the room. From there, he becomes her regular bull, eventually moving in on the weekends while I sleep in the guest room. The problem is most people don't have the patience to let the story unfold.

I get 1's and 2's a lot lately. It looks a bit odd when you get over forty 4 & 5 stars and a single 1. They never have the guts to say who they are or why they did it. If my little scribblings are only worth 1 star to them their stories must be outstanding. Trouble is, they never let me see them. I just ignore them now. I get all my pleasure from the nice people who leave me encouragement in their comments.

It seems like this site used to be fairly laid-back, with fairly generous readers when it came to voting and comments. Lush still doesn't allow anonymous comments, does it? It was different from, say, Literotica, with its huge membership and large numbers of anonymous comments. From the very beginning, I saw the fangs come out over there at times. It took a thick-skin to publish there, although of course that doesn't apply to everyone who comments on that site.

It's a bit early to tell if this site is changing or not. I wonder if a lot of people left after the "re-launch" of the site in early September. It's very difficult to tell what is going on behind the scenes. I have gotten some hints from a few other members who were not happy with the results and were considering leaving or at least cutting back on their submissions. I know I almost "quit" (not literally cancel my membership) in September until another member helped me deal with certain issues about merely logging in, for example. (I had to talk to him on the Literotica forum to find out what was going on!)

Literotica seems pretty dead now. I posted a chapter there and a chapter there and on Literotica it got 700 views in 2 months. Here I had 4,000 views in the first few days.

Views can vary a lot according to various factors, including subject matter. Literotica is a pretty big site; I haven't really noticed a big fall-off yet. Something in "Reviews and Essays" (there is really no equivalent here) will generally get fewer views than fiction. Also, chapters in a series will generally go down as the series progresses. no matter where it is posted. I haven't done a close analysis of this, but for the most part Lush has fewer views overall. There can be anomalies, of course.

I started a series over there on October 12, and it's gotten ten-thousand views so far, which seems respectable. An earlier series I did there dropped off pretty steadily over the course of eight chapters. (I'm not one of those people who can write seventy chapters, although I have seen those.)

I've noticed things change here of late. They have a way of doing some things that seem unfair to me. I like Lush because they gave me a start but I've also started writing somewhere else. So far I've managed to submit twenty stories. All were received very well. I use a different name so it feels like a fresh start. I will still stay with Lush and their sister site out of loyalty. It's sad but I was never made to feel a good fit here. I'm not sure my style of story telling is right for Lush. I may be wrong, it's just a feeling I get.

I don't think the view counts on stories can be trusted since the change. Lately, in the Micro world where I live, very good stories by popular authors might get several hundred over the first week, while a number of very mediocre pieces have racked up more than a thousand in a few days. That is a startling change from three months ago, when only a handful of examples might achieve that in a month. I have seen this same pattern in other categories, as well.

I'm not sure if Lush or any other site has a "style," per se. It's fine to spread things around and try different audiences; I certainly do it. From what I've seen of your work, it seems to "fit" here, although it's a bit hard to define what that means. I know you said it's more of a feeling than a specific complaint. It seems that there are various ways that authors work, and if one follows the rules of the site, then one should be okay. Lush can seem a bit intrusive at times, perhaps, as does Literotica too occasionally. I never felt, however, that they were treating me unfairly. I only got frustrated with them last month because some of the technical problems back then were so daunting.

There is a group of odd people here who deliberately seek out cuckold stories and give them low scores. I don't know why. It's discussed on another thread, see

So I would suggest that you don't put your story in the cuckold category. Particularly since, as someone has already pointed out, there's no cuckolding in your story.

Edit: Yes, as you say below, try not to let it bother you! Because if the trolls see that it bothers you, they will do it again, I'm afraid.

I guess there will always be undesirables in every crowd. When I write I'm really only writing for one person and I know she loves my style. Sharing with the rest of the world is just an added bonus. I just have to not let it bother me.

There is no definition of what the numbers correlate to. Why should a story get a 4 vice a 5? With no definition, how can you complain? My personal definition is below. I can change the definition if there is a more formal score.

I have been brought to task as my high rating is a 4. I reserve 5s for those above and beyond that require a need to change my pants.

I am curious about something. It seems like the writers are more interested in ratings than getting a charge out of the reader.

I am one who wants honesty above all. I can't grow as a writer without it. But, I don't think a 1 fits any published story or it shouldn't have gotten past mods. All 5s doesn't help me push myself harder. And I mostly want to make you "feel" something... negative or positive. I am fine with lower scores, just please comment too, so I know what you didn't like.

Yeah, there seems to be a "special" group of trolls out there who post ratings with the sole purpose of lowering one's overall score. Of course, on Literotica, most of the negative feedback I've received is anonymous and poorly written. All of my stories are incest, which alone triggers some folks, but then I have a few with male bisexual activity thrown in, and that REALLY triggers some readers! I envision some dude wanking along to my mom/son or brother/sister, then the guy gets it on with his best friend. LOL. Oops! On the other hand, the lesbian elements in my incest stories only gather praise. My most recent submission on Literotica, a novel-length story involving two women, then mom/son, has over 64K views, the coveted "hot" icon, plus some heartfelt feedback. At the end of the day, I just delete the worst of them, since they're only leaving a pile of crap with no constructive criticism. Also, I just write what gets me off and as well as I can as a layman wordsmith. IMHO, catering to "the crowd" is a fickle business.

I'm new to Lush, but have been submitting on Literotica for 11 years. This site has a lot more interaction if you're a member, more visuals and such. I, too, want to introduce my work to a new audience, so here I am!

I've put off posting chapters for the time being. I'm interested in feedback and it seems comments on stories aren't happening as much anymore. If something I've written warrants a 1 or 2, I think there should be feedback as to why for improvement. Its free content that I've put many hundreds of hours writing and editing into, so when it gets trash scored after putting all that effort in, it just depresses me to the point I want to bin it all. I'm hoping an option to turn off scoring comes back so I can do away with the scoring anxiety.

I guess it depends on why you are writing as to what matters to you. I do it because it's fun and challenging and I enjoy it. For me comments are great, I like to hear if people enjoyed the story or liked certain parts of it and don't mind critical comments that are useful. It's all good feedback.

I pay more attention to the Likes than the scoring system, and to me a 1 or 2 just means they didn't like or enjoy some aspect of the story. For me to give a 4 is a show of appreciation and recognition of a very well done piece that was a good read, a 5 is an excellent piece of work that impressed me. Everyone has their own ideas of what the scores represent.

Don't get upset or discouraged if someone doesn't like what you offer, many others do enjoy it.

It does not bother me greatly (just a little bit!) but I do wonder if it is the same person doing it each time. It could be that they think the story is only worth 2 or just maybe (if it is always the same person) they just like voting '2' on stories.

The same thing is happening to me lately. I don't mind a 1 or 2 as long as they say why. But they don't.

I get a descent share of comments and votes all things considered, but seeing your latest little boat, a week out, becalmed with less than 175 reads and surrounded by others with many hundreds pretty much kills any motivation to set sail again.

Do these people actually read the story, or just give '1' or '2' because of the author or subject.

There are "genres" that I have no interest in reading, so I do not read them. Why read a story about something you do not like and then give it a '1' or '2'.

Honestly, focusing too much on scores will rob you of your joy here. As will comparing yourself to what others get. I get 2s too. Had a few 1s as well.

I wonder if the score was meant to be for the literary style, the storyline, or the sex. I also noted that I had two low scores before one comment on one story - it looks like anonymous votes before any comment. are accepted. Honestly, the comments mean more to me than any score.

I agree that comments are far more meaningful than votes. I get a 2 on a high percentage of my stories and I wonder if it is the same person doing it. Got a 1 a few stories ago as well. I would imagine that 'serious' voting is done on the basis of how much a story aroused the reader rather than whether it was worth putting forward for a Nobel award.

I'm a novice at best. And I don't have a desire to write anything else. It just seems that when I publish, I am inundated with inbox messages to chat and such, or the comments are all positive, even though I would appreciate some legitimate feedback. It seems that the rating system should not be stars but like a rating like Siskel and Ebert, where instead of thumbs up it should be boners. I guess wading through solicitations turned me off of publishing.

Unless you're shooting for universal appeal (and good luck with that!) stories are going to hit different ways with different readers. Some readers enjoy what I write, and that's great. Others don't and they're free to fuck off to a different story that is more up their alley. Making some people happy (including myself) with my writing is a more satisfying goal than trying to please everyone.
