I got balls deep in Winston Churchill this past weekend.

The Darkest Hour should be nominated for best picture this year at the Oscars, but in my opinion it shouldn't win. Gary Oldman, however should be the front runner for best actor. If you haven't seen this movie or Dunkirk, then I suggest watching them together since they actually cover the same historical time period. While Dunkirk shows the action on the ground, Darkest Hour shows what was going on behind the scenes. I feel like they compliment one another quite nicely and both illustrate what is often not recognized as a very important turning point in World War 2. The fact that these movies don't involve the United States pretty much make them underdogs when it comes to awards season.

Unfortunately, another Churchill bio pic was released earlier this year.

This one is garbage. Normally it would pass as merely mediocre, but compared to to Darkest Hour, it's inadequacies are highlighted. Don't waste your time.

This movie covers the last days of the war, including D-day. A better cinematic option would be "Into the Storm."

It covers the same micro-time period and is much better acted.

I also watched the lectures by the Teaching Company on Churchill to give some background info (because I'm a fucking nerd.)

The Teaching Company (Now called The Great Courses) are a superb learning tool, and also a pretty good way to pass the time if you have a long commute to work, or want something to listen to while doing boring boring cardio at the gym.

I've listened to or watched about 50 of them over the last 10-15 years. There are some duds but most are pretty good. Depending on your interest you can find something to your taste. (And you can even get them for free if you know how...)

Seconded. Can be pretty dry and dusty depending on the lecturer, but generally excellent. I find it useful to have Google images open as I listen, so I can bring up relevant maps, portraits, locations or whatever, depending on what's being discussed.

Last film I saw was The Last Entertainer, a musical about PT Barnum. It's far from a great movie, BUT it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch: stylish, well paced and brilliantly choreographed.
My body begged for release and for more; for a perfect moment, a sublime stalemate held

Do you mean the "Greatest Showman?"

This was a passion project of Hugh Jackman and it took like 4 years to make due to the inexperience of the director. So far audiences have loved it, but critics have given a much more luke-warm response.

It should be a shoe in for best song, but other than than it will get be slim pickings come awards season. Because of the audience approval, it probably would have been more successful earlier in the year when their was less competition. It obviously should have been a Broadway play first to build word of mouth like Chicago, Les Miserables etc. FOX can still probably do a broadway run of the Play especially if it continues to pick up steam. I think the decision to put this forward as an oscar contender was a tad bit ambitious. The soundtrack will sell well and Hugh Jackman should be a given another free reign to pursue his broadway aspirations (which are his actual passion).

NomDePlume.... Which courses Are you interested. I've listened to many, some twice. I can give some insight depending on your interests and proffered lecturers.

I also like to look at maps while listening, which is why I like the video courses for certain subjects
Can’t wait for the next insidious movie ?
Just watched Thor:Ragnarock.

So good. So funny. The perfect type of humor. If you liked the humor in this movie check out "what we do in the shadows" by the same director.

I don't think that its the type of humor that will appeal to most North American audiences, but for British, Aussie or especially New Zealand audiences its a treat. It's a very subtle and understated humor. It's great.

And Kate Blanchett looks fucking hot....

It's difficult to make something humorous yet still have dramatic effect while appealing to a general audience. In that case this wins on all levels. 8/10

And yes... way better that fucking Wonder Woman.
Want to see -- Maze Runner - The death cure
We just went to see Insidious: The Last Key on Friday and OH MY GOSH! I loved it. I'm a big fan of the series, but this one is by far the best one of them. If you like them or even like scary movies, go see it!
Finally got to go see The Shape of Water tonight.

Oh my god, it was better than I expected. I've been looking forward to fishman sex for months now, and it delivered for me.
I am probably the only one on Lush that enjoys these kinds of movies but I am hoping to see Peter Rabbit, this weekend.
Getting ready for the Winter Olympics, I recently watched:

and:

Both good movies.
Going to see 50 Shades Freed ASAP.

Brandie
VENOM would like to see VENOM.
Darkest Hour- very historical.
The Post was excellent especially M. Streep and T.Hanks
Saw--- Wonder -- Liked it very much...
I caught a showing on one of the Starz movie channels last week of a 2002 film which I'd never viewed before. It was pleasantly enjoyable.

There are a lot of movies from the late 2001 to mid 2003 timeframe I didn't see. The non-stop/repeat airing of 9/11 footage traumatized me and then drove me away from watching anything on the boob tube or at the theatre for many months.

In The Bedroom

Sissy Spacek & Tom Wilkinson headline, while Marisa Tomei, Nick Stahl and Tom Cruise's 1st cousin - William Mapother all provide solid secondary roles.

The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
I Watched "A Futile and Simple Gesture."

The story of the making of National Lampoon and the tragic ending of founder Doug Kenney.

I then watched:

A documentary on the rise and fall of National Lampoon.

I recommend both for fans of comedy especially if you are old enough to remember the impact the National Lampoon

I've always loved National Lampoon's Animal House, as well as Christmas Vacation, etc. Those were old by the time I came along but they connected with me. Showing Animal House was an event at my fraternity. We'd link it with a toga party and have it playing on DVD on every TV in the frat house. One of the brothers linked all the TVs. We'd do it once a year, so four of those for me. And I kind of re-enacted the motorcycle up the stairs scene. Didn't come out exactly like the movie as it was anticipated and then there was the time my toga snagged on a protruding nail on the handrail. My girlfriend and I had traded underwear and I was wearing hers on my head, so, well... stuff happens. Nothing like a naked wheelie on the front lawn.

But I've been told stories of the 1970s impact of National Lampoon Magazine in colleges. My dad won't say anything but my 2 uncles have spilled the beans. Oh, and Animal House spurred a national toga party rage in the USA and I assume Canada.

From my own toga party experience. The toga is best worn with nothing at all under it, even is accidents occur.

"A Futile and Stupid Gesture' is now on my must see list. Thanks.

PS. Animal House, the movie was like a Bible to my college fraternity.
Watched 3 billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and it was better than I expected. Some of the characters are a little cartoonish but it didn’t really distract from the overall experience. It’s one of those movies that sticks with you for a few days.
I noticed Sprite changed her avatar to a pic from "Ghost Story."

I watched it a few weeks ago.

In a time when most movies are remakes, sequels or reboots, it's refreshing to see movie so totally original. Definitely not for everyone. If you are the kind of person that like "Fast and Furious" movies... then this one probably is not for you. It's very subtle and cerebral. I can't even really say whether I enjoyed it or not. But it makes you think . There is a twenty minute segment where Rooney Mara eats a whole apple pie and then vomits. Definitely an artistic film and definitely original.

Worst movie I've seen this year. Probably the worst movie I've seen in the previous 12 months. I don't usually trash movies, because I feel that it's far too easy. This one was really really bad. Not the acting. Just the story. It's flat and dull.

Lots of people ragged on Baywatch this past year and made "worst movie of the year claims."

But Baywatch at least had this:

Due to a life that simply won't stop, I have not yet seen The Force Awakens.
