Have just read President's Putin's views on the North Korean situation as expressed at that summit thing he's at in China. He is very wise. I doubt our media will pick up on his comments but that is to be expected. There is no wisdom but their wisdom which takes a long second place behind their owner's instructions.

If you already have, what did you think of his assessment of our lose-lose situation whatever we do?.

OMG... would seem not!

Just as well I didn't quote Vlad the Bad on his opinion... the inevitability of a gummy (*edited by moderation team) North Korea.

the entire world is losing. gummy bears (*edited by moderator to aleviate stress to other members)** shouldn't exist. nobody should have them. it's the sickest kind of hypocrisy.

This thread is stressing me out. Could we replace the words "gummy bears" with "gummy bears," please?

Don't believe everything that you read.

I saw on a news program that some NK expert said the people of North Korea would "eat grass" to prove their military superiority over the hated regimes of free countries. Gotta admit he's right on THAT one.

I read this in a news report. They have been attributed to President Putin. Seems both Russia and China see a nuclear North Korea as inevitable. This is scary I think. They think no amount of sanctions will deter the North from fulfilling its nuclear ambitions.

This would mean that the US Policy of Presidents Bush, Obama and now Trump , of a nuclear North Korea as being unacceptable, is doomed to failure.

So what happens if they sell their technology to their friends in Iran?. Neat circumvention of the Iranian nuclear treaty. Even worse ... sell the finished product, in miniature form, to terrorist organisations?.

Real conundrum we have.

Kim only got this far because the rest of the world let him. Isn't it safe to say that he should be stopped from supplying Iran or anyone else with nuclear weapons, at all costs?

I think nuclear war is too high a price for that.

Kim got this far because in spite of what the rest of world did to try to stop it, he managed to get it done anyway. In a way, everything the rest of the world did has only helped the Kim dynasty stay on the throne by giving them proof that it is the world, led by America, that keeps punishing them for wanting to be a strong nation.

I don't believe that at all. The rest of the world isn't punishing him. They are trying to stop him from shooting off nuclear missiles whenever and wherever he feels like it. He has threatened several other countries with nuclear attacks, mine included. This is a man who kills his own relatives. Human life means nothing to him. The man is unstable and unpredictable.

Kim has completely repressed his citizens and taken their basic freedoms. Murder, , enslavement, extermination, torture, forced abortions, imprisonment in secretive prison camps for perceived objectors of the government are sent for torture and abuse and starvation. Fear of punishment is used to silence dissent. There is no independent media or freedom of religion. He can't do much more harm to his own people so now he wants to laud it over the rest of the world. He's finding that he can't just do what he likes so turns to threats and provocative military "tests".

It is the United Nations as a whole who are making the decisions about what courses of action are to be taken to try to curb his arms development. The United States just happens to be a large country with a large army. THE US are not solely responsible for any action taken against North Korea thus far.

Oh crap, are we allowed to disagree with each other?
I wasn't saying the rest of the world is punishing them, nor that the US is the leading party in imposing sanctions on North Korea. I said that that is how Kim and his predecessors have used the economic measures against NK and the military cooperation of the US with SK in their propaganda, which is a large part of what helps them repress their people and has kept them in the saddle.

Of course it would be better if he wasn't a dictator and if he didn't have nuclear weapons and the missiles needed to deploy them. There is however only so much the world can do against a regime without actually invading on their territory. Doing that in North Korea was never a real option, because it would immediately draw China and South Korea into a conflict that has the potential to quickly escalate into an all out war between two superpowers. And that too, is too high a price to pay because let's face it, Iran doesn't need Kim. If they really want to build a bomb, they can. Terrorists don't need North Korea to build a simple nuclear device that could wipe out a city centre either. All they need is enough uranium or plutonium and the internet.

North Korea is a lesson on taking care of things BEFORE they are a REAL problem
So - does anyone here agree that *gummy bears* shouldn't be allowed for ANY country? I just don't fancy the idea of blowing up millions of people.

Way too intense for The Spa, Callum. Please consider dialing it back going forward. Thanks so much.

I saw a meme that said you should eat gummi bears two at a time so they don't have to die alone. But they are safe around me... I don't like them.

Meanwhile ... what do we do about North Korea?.

Do we just step back and accept that they are going to be a nuclear state?. I think that if there is to be no meaningful dialogue it's either that or 'boom'!. Of course American prestige will evaporate in some parts of the world if we do back down. Makes that twit in North Korea a greater hero than Bin Laden to our enemies. Successive Administrations seem to have backed us in to a corner. Even if we do back down, and try to manage north Korea the way we did the USSR [we did win that Cold War.. least I think we did], will that work aginst NK and do we have the patience?.

Any ideas on what we do next?. Do we have any Members from Japan, South Korea, or the Pacific Islands reading this I wonder?. Love to hear what their opinions are.

I think China and Russia will go on supporting NK as long as it suits their political agendas. Demeaning America on the international stage suits those agendas I think. Plus China likes having a buffer state between it and South Korea, which I think it sees as an extension of the USA.

Conundrum and then some.

We may not have much, if any, choice in accepting North Korea as a nuclear state. Like it or not, any state that really wants nuclear weapons can have them. After all, nukes and effective missiles are a state of the art 1945 technology. North Korea seems willing to pay a terrible price for having nuclear weapons. Will the brandish them with good judgement? Well, that remains to be seen and I have my doubts, as I have considerable doubts of the judgement and maturity of Donald Trump.

Still, the last thing we should expect is a direct North Korean attack. They know that would be suicidal, in fact, they are very well aware that they have fallen militarily well behind South Korea. They are a regime whose existence depends upon a narrative of constant threat and sacrifice, so doing the right thing for their people necessarily requires admitting that narrative is a lie. So they bluster. The key to dealing with this is seeing their bluster for what it is without forgetting they do not see the world at all as we do or understand our way of thinking. That does make their judgement . . . ahem, problematic. Right now I'm even more worried about our judgement, because Trump feels he cannot be seen to lose face because he might lose face.

That's a lot of range. How many warheads can they deliver? How good is the missile defense of the countries within that range?

Kim is the most absolute of absolute dictators. He has a worldview that most westerners can't understand, so it is hard to predict what he might do. I wouldn't even begin to try, but if that map is accurate, he can certainly cause a lot of problems if he snaps.

That's the problem with having your country run by unpredictable madmen.

I don't think rocket man can deliver any more than a single warhead... yet!. Defence? In Australia and NZ defence is what keeps the animals from straying biggrin Don't have any against missiles. Perhaps the new US bases in the Northern Territory do. Hope so. Poor NZ hasn't got even that.
One of the Ministers in the last NZ government was actually struck by a missile. A disgruntled lady voter threw a dildo at him.. long range... great shot... sod kept it too!

There are unpredictable mad men in the Australian Parliament too ... plus one wonderfully crazy lady from Queensland. NZ has a new government and a lady Prime Minister who is as sensible as they come. There is a man called Winston Peters... he's Deputy Prime Minister ... but I like him. He's my sort of mad.
Can somebody please give one possible reason why North Korea would send nuclear missiles to Australia?
