The problem with that is, that you did not vote against marriage, you voted against equal rights and equal treatment for gay people. Everyone has the right not to get married if they don't want to. That right will never be affected by the right of people to marry who they love. Right now that right is being denied to gay people in Australia, and you voted to keep it that way.
You would be suprised how many gays and lesbians are oppposed to same sex marriage. They are the quiet, unheard minority, or could be majority since no one has taken a poll. For those in Australia the protection afforded by legislation relating to de facto relationships is enough. They do not see gay marriage as an equal rights issue or an equal treatment issue. They are just not hung up on the word 'marriage'. Some don't, usually, argue against it for others if others want it, whilst others do so argue. In this respect I suppose that makes us the same as everyone else, which is a form of equality. Will be interesting to see how they vote.
