we do try to be flexible, with the understanding that this is, at heart, an amateur site - usually, as long as it's consistent and it's obvious while reading, we try to be lenient in most cases. In Steph's case, while he writes a little outside the box, he IS consistent and he has developed it as a style. Also, he's really stubborn about change (and a brilliant writer, although i refuse to admit that in public).

btw, don't ever feel like i'm picking on you - i actually appreciate your thoughtful comments on writing within these threads.- that's why i do try to clarify at times - I know a lot of people don't have any idea what goes on in the back room when it comes to modding - a little transparency seems like a good idea. smile

Thanks for that, Sprite.

Yes, a little clarity goes a long way sometimes. No, I don't think you or anyone else is picking on me. I just feel people get the wrong impression at times and think I'm challenging Lush's rules -- I'm really not.

I understand this is amateur site that has it's rules ingrained and has a set of principles by which it stands. If I had a problem with the site's rules or its members, I wouldn't be here.

Anyway, I'm always happy to help. If anybody has anymore questions, just throw them my way and I'll do my best to help out.

The moderators work extremely hard behind the scenes keeping this place running to its optimum performance, so they could probably do with a little help sometimes in giving out advice to members. Therefore if anybody has any grammar or punctuation related questions, get a thread going and I'll be happy to help.
There's some good advice on Grammar Girl.

But I would just choose a style that suits you and follow it consistently. I can't even remember what I do, even for dialogue. I think I write in the first person I don't bother with quotes or anything. But for everything else I probably just looked at what the most recent novel I read did and copied that.

That said, I don't have much thinking in my stories.
A writer can do anything they want, at least when if comes to punctuation. That said, believe Mickey and Google and DO NOT use quotation marks, either single or double, to show thoughts.

Cheers for that, Rumple. I owe you one.

I just thought it odd because I've read hundreds of books and don't recall ever reading an author who used inverted commas to indicate thought. It would give rise to ambiguity if anything, and the purpose of punctuation is to do the opposite of that.

Whatever you use, it should be consistent and easily understood. I am a story verifier and we do not have a one firm rule for thoughts, just set it apart from dialogue, make it easy to understand and make it consistent throughout your story. Consistency is very important.

Myself, I have been successful using the single quotes with italics. The use of italics without a quote mark at all is acceptable.

Single quotes with italics are my preferred method. That unique combination separate inner thoughts from other things that might require italics. As long as you are consistent, you will be fine.
