Every so often, I suffer from writers block. I can feel it coming. I open up my laptop. I want to write and then, nothing. I have ideas but cannot put the detail in. It gets so frustrating.

A couple of years ago, I didn't write for nearly a year. I had no desire to even open my laptop. I got out of it by continually reading books and stories, until I felt I just had to start writing again.

How do you get out of writers block?

Thanks

Abi

I've never suffered from genuine writer's block but I use various tricks to keep my words flowing. William Stafford said, ""There is no such thing as writer's block for writers whose standards are low enough." I really like this - stop trying to produce perfect prose - just get those ideas down on paper (rather than laptop if that has become a psychological barrier in itself). Start your stories at the end, or the middle. Just write the core of whatever is in your head; capture those ideas and store them, ignoring completely the detail.

If you can't find the right word, leave it out; can't find the right name, ignore it.

Change your scenery - go to the local library or if you work, find a quiet corner and write during your lunch.

Writing is like any other bad habit; you'll find yourself doing it eventually. (I just made that up - I like it!!)

Many congratulations - especially to Liz, BillyB and Lupus!! Another fab Lush comp... roll on the next one...
Not instant - but tell me what he wants to do to me and then start doing it. The anticipation of what's coming next is very intense.

Here's my joke.

An Englishman on holiday in Ireland, leaves his horse on single yellow lines. An Irish traffic warden comes along and puts a ticket on the horse.

When the Englishman comes back he's outraged and finds the traffic warden to give him a piece of his mind.

"What do you mean by giving my horse a ticket?!" asks the Englishman.

"Well you can't park there."

"But it's a horse!"

"I'm sorry, but you can't park there at all."

"Hang about," said the Englishman, "what if it had been double yellow lines?"

"Ah well then, you can't park there at all at all."

This joke reminds me of The Bubberbandits. I was in a car in Cork when they played an edited version of this on the radio. Brilliant!!

One of my brothers got a buzz cut at a friend's house on Christmas Eve after we'd been out drinking. My friend's Hoover exploded as she tried to clear up and my Mum cried when she saw him on Christmas morning.

If you feel like a change, do it. If you like it, the fact that you're happy will attract guys anyway.

It depends where you put the banana, I suppose!!

i know this question has been asked before but my present GF says that no woman enjoys anal sex and does not want to try anything no matter what. I have even tried to stimulate her there with my tongue and as soon as i do she says no. My last 2 GFs really enjoyed anal and would even ask for it and 1 of them even used to masturbate with a dildo in her ass. i try to tell my new GF these things and she still says those women only did that stuff to please me and that they could not have really enjoyed it.
DO WOMEN JUST PRETEND TO ENJOY ANAL, OR DO SOME ACTUALLY LIKE IT??????

This kind of blanket claim is used to make someone feel 'normal'. Some men and women make an excellent job of pretending to enjoy it given the amount of evidence on the internet!!
I've never got rid of actual writing but I have a habit of ripping pictures and stuff out of magazines which I think will help me 'see' characters and places. Those do get binned occasionally. Reading Lisa's post reminded me that I have misplaced an early poem that won an award at school. I should have another rummage around for that.
I've learnt to be less precious about what I write. I once had a story printed in a magazine and they highlighted a bit of text which had a grammatical mistake in it. I went back to the document which I had written three months earlier and there it was.

Write the story; edit to the point where you're happy with it but accept that it might not be perfect. Move on.

I had a dream the other night where I pissed all over my sister in law and I never really thought about it before, but it was extremely arousing.
Now my sister in law is very attractive, but for obvious reasons i'd much rather attempt this with my wife.
Any ladies in here ever been pissed on? Did you want to do it? How did your partner pursuade you?
I need help on how to hopefully persuade her to give it a go

You're kind of thinking about this the wrong way round. You don't want to 'persuade' her to give it a go. You want to make it something that she wants to try. If you watch porn together, try and find something that she'll enjoy which has peeing in it and let her know that it turns you on. If she likes reading ebooks, try one of mine ;-)

Given that you've never even thought about this before, you might not enjoy it yourself when you try it. There's a huge difference between dreams / fantasies and reality. The whole peeing thing might be a subconscious metaphor about the balance of power within your relationships.

My advice: tread carefully.

It wasn't just about you. More than thirty of my stories got removed and now I'm trying to edit and get them published again, and I have faced the same problem a couple of times. So I decided to post this and ask if Lush has raised its bar? Moderators have become a little more strict? Or do Lush only wants the best writers now? I know I'm a terrible writer (when it comes to grammatical things).
LUSH has been very great and I'm thankful for all the moderators and readers. I'm just feeling very down now because of seeing rejection so many times. I have seen my stories getting much more reads than others, I have lost my 'Author 50' and 'Millionaires badge' but I compromised with that because nothing could have done about that. I have been writing from past five years and this week wasn't very good, so I might have overreacted.
It wasn't about one person. I'm only thankful to everyone here. I just.... I don't know what else to say. I hope you have got what I wanted to say and if you have felt bad about me posting this forum then I'm extremely sorry.

Hi BraveBitch,

All writers on Lush need to remember that the story moderators aren't the enemy: the mods don't want to reject stories and all writers can help by learning from their mistakes. If a mod points out something that will help your writing, remember that by doing it, it will help readers enjoy your story and will almost certainly lead to better scores and comments.

The question shouldn't be 'has Lush raised its bar' but rather, 'how can I raise my bar?'

I love writing romantic stories but have been getting increasingly side-tracked when writing the more intimate parts of the story. This usually ends up with the story being way sexier than I intended in the first place. Does anyone else have this problem?

You can easily solve this 'problem' simply by setting out to write incredibly sexy stories. That way you'll meet your own expectations and your readers on Lush will love you !!

It's time to let the imagination run wild.

Are you sure? Last time I let my imagination run wild it was arrested and spent six months in clink.

My WIP is a new Vampire Story.... Hmmmm...

(Seriously, Team Lush, am I allowed enter 'cos I used to be a Judge? Frankly I doubt it, in fairness... Please advise?)

Nicola: "Yeah you can ENTER... It's not like there's any danger of you winning the bugger..."

Me: "Urm, thanks, I think..."

Brilliant bit of banter!! Thanks for giving me a laugh
As I tend to take my porn seriously, I've subscribed to various sites and I own about 400 porn DVDs. It's something I enjoy, so yes I'd say it's well worth.

A mod changed "travelling" to "traveling" in one of my stories. It bugs me still.

The spell check is American. I blame that ;-)

Can someone remind me when RRs started? I'm sure it was since I joined Lush in 2011. The list of them goes back before then, so I guess there's been a bit of post-dated recommending.

From memory, I think it was May 2013.

As well as looking at new stories, mods browse through the other 27 000 stories on the site. The job means that we're looking for problems to fix, but if we come across something we think is worthy of an RR, we can award it.
Remember that you must have the permission of the copyright holder for any picture you use!
Yes. And sometimes I have to wait aaaaaaages until he comes in so I can pee. I'm going to do myself an injury one of these days!!

You know what would look better than you in your bra and panties? You out of you bra and panties.

I said that to my boss. He wasn't pleased.
There was always more to Lush than " Fantasies" and it looks like you'd found a lot of agreeable stories in other categories, judging by the contents of your 'Favourite Stories' list!!

First of all, thanks for any help you can lend. I'm looking for a story where as much of the universe as possible is lesbian. It could be a group of friends who are all lesbian, a club or bar or something where everyone is lesbian...

My exact thought that I had was of a locker room scene. A girl starts attending a new high school, and in the locker room, she sees a girl pushing another up against a locker and making out with her. Instead of the other girls in the locker room explaining that they're lesbians, they just explain that the one girl is just marking her territory. So basically it's a normal world, except there are no boys and everyone is a lesbian.

Do I have to write this one myself, or does something like this exist already? My writing skills are not too sharp... hehe

Thanks in advance!

I started writing a series about this very scenario called 'Sex In Space'. It didn't sell too well, so the project kind of stalled. It's still all in my head but Episode 1 is available from all disreputable bookshops.

I just interrupted sprite from her beauty sleep (not that I'm convinced she needs any), and she confirmed that this is in fact how things work. I don't know where my eyes have been all that time, then. Okay, I do know, but I'll admit nothing.

The idea of consciously linking to the previous chapter hadn't really crossed my mind yet, but then, I'm sometimes famous for my single-mindedness smile

Perhaps having both would be a good idea? I.e. being able to select "previous chapter" and "next chapter" and have both directions updated in the current as well as the "surrounding" stories.
Or, if it is technically feasible, perhaps the linking could be added as a feature to "my stories" page, so changing the link doesn't trigger a new submission.

Just bouncing ideas right now.

I went back through my Lush stories and linked them in the order that they should be read, rather than the order they were written. A lot of the time the "You may also like..." section picks out other parts of my multi-part stories as well.

I'm sure that readers can navigate their way around to find what they want to read anyway.

Master J, Catnip,

An objective review and an informed edit are both critical to producing a good, not to mention great result. Lush's editors/reviewers provide both, for which I am grateful.

An uninformed edit is a catastrophe, of course. I recall decades ago filing an intelligence report on the aftermath of a nuclear accident. "Every oncology patient also presented with (DELETED) cancer." That was changed by a nincompoop to "Every oncology patient was also presented with (DELETED) cancer." At the national level the report was thrown away as garbage because I obviously did not know what I was talking about.

I had an early lush submission rejected for "typos and punctuation mistakes" and mixing both narrative and speech in a single paragraph. The criticisms were all incorrect, but I got the important advice. I rewrote the chapter from its freshman college reading level down to eighth grade. Worked like a charm.

Just so you know, mixing narrative and speech together makes stories much more difficult to read, particularly on a screen. In the same way that your text above is more difficult to read if it is presented without paragraphs:

Do authors ever read other entries before they submit their own?

If they do:

a) Has it ever put you off submitting your story because of the quality of the other competitors?

Or

b) Inspired you to enter when you had no real intention of doing so.

Is there an etiquette with regard to this?

The only time I haven't read another entry before submitting my own was the 'Quickie Sex Competition' and that was because my aim was to get the first entry on the board, so there weren't any other entries.

a) I've never been put off submitting anything anywhere and never will be - and neither should any other writer.

b) I don't need 'inspiring': I just let my imagination run around naked for a while and try to take notes.
