Speaking of 1968, my dad used to tell me a story about his mother putting a knife to his throat on his 21st birthday that year. My dad boxed and learned karate when he was a young man, but he told me his words to her were:

"You gave me life, so you can take it."

Of course, after that she pulled the knife away. I think of that story every once in a while because my dad went on to live for 48 more years.
