I agree that it’s best to punch the reader between the eyes with something that will hook them. Even if the opening action or dialogue is something that actually happens later in the story, there are ways to introduce with something exciting, and then spend a thousand words explaining how you got there. You only have a couple of paragraphs to get the reader’s attention and hang onto it. Start with sometime that will make them wonder. Intrigue them or lose them.

That often means not starting with backstory. Interspersing it and explaining how you got here bit by bit, placing puzzle pieces for them, can be more intriguing than dumping it on them all at once. And as an aside, when you’re done with a bit of backstory exposition, for the love of God, please do not write “fast forward.” There are a thousand better ways to change your time setting or write about its passage.

There’s no formula, and it depends on the quality of writing, the familiarity with the author, the depth of emotional involvement and certainly the hotness of the buildup and the sex.

And yet it is simple. Do I like the story?

A Like is certainly more likely from me in certain genres or situations that tend to appeal to me anyway, in which I may be more willing to overlook a few flaws if I find myself getting turned on. It’s also more likely if it’s a familiar author whose works I have Liked in the past.

It’s less likely in genres that tend to be active turnoffs for me (dom/sub, ), and yet I have Liked quite a number of stories with subject matter that tends to repel me, because they were very well-written. In other words, I still like the story despite the subject matter.

The biggest deal-killer for me in terms of Liking a story is poor quality writing with significant grammatical errors (such as writing “discrete” when you mean “discreet,” a current pet peeve), repeating the same thought multiple times or using the same word for something over and over again when plenty of synonyms are available. That makes a story much harder for me to Like, though not impossible if it’s incredibly hot otherwise.

As a reader, I certainly don’t Like every story that I read. But when I do, I almost always try to leave a few words as a Comment.

As an author (and, not fully understanding the etiquette, I didn’t necessarily do this the first year I was on here), I try to reply to absolutely every comment, without exception. I don’t usually PM, which never occurred to me might be expected, but I have started to post thank-you messages on the Walls of readers who’ve Liked or commented on my stories. Seems a nice practice.

I will add that I’ve found this to be true from an author’s perspective and not just as a reader. My “Dick Job” story, for example, absolutely crackles with action, with not a boring paragraph, and it is my only submittal to have placed in the top ten of a competition. Yet despite that recognition, it has only received 3300 views and 32 votes. That places it in the bottom half of my stories for attention. Because at 9000 words, it is just too goddamned long to attract many eyeballs.

I’m with Ensorceled in thinking that around 3000 is usually a pretty optimal number of words. Fewer than that, and it’s hard to really develop a story and the protagonist’s point of view. Much more than that, and the number of views and Likes starts to drop - precipitously, after 5000 words or so.

I find this is true if my own reading habits. There are a great many excellent authors on this site, and new stories are landing in my queue nearly every day. If I have some 3000-word stories and some 7000-word stories in there - and I always do - guess which ones I’m going to read first! The result is a good number of longer stories, by authors I admire and respect, languishing in my queue for months - or years.
