I think breaking it up worked so well in this case, even though all six chapters could have been combined under the 10,000 word limit. I actually found it more accessible as I could read a chapter when I had a spare few minutes, whereas I wouldn't start a longer story knowing I didn't have time to finish in one sitting,

I have never broken a story up, unless forced to by the word limit. But Annie's story has made me reconsider one I am writing which is effectively in seven parts. I was going to publish as one but maybe not.


Thanks, CuriousAnnie, for your analysis - and your confirmation that in this case breaking it down into six short chapters worked.

One of the reasons it worked for this story, I think, was because the "story arc" involved a series of small steps, as the heroine's relationship with the hero developed a little bit at a time. I could have submitted the whole thing as one story, but it would have seemed like a roller-coaster, with a lot of little peaks along the way. I'm not sure that would have worked for a sex story, where you want to arouse your reader slowly and gradually, but in one steady pulse, building to a single climax.

Relating that to your original question, I think it does depend on the "arc" of your story. If you're building to a single climax, then submitting in one 10,000 word piece might be best.

That said, I've never submitted anything longer than 7,000 words without splitting it into shorter parts.

That may also because we Millennials have famously short attention spans. ;)

Thanks to everyone who's left such kind comments on all chapters of "The Postulant's Tale", especially the final one, which resolves Abigail's dilemma in what I hope is a satisfactory manner.

Of all my Lush stories, I think this one might have had the longest gestation period. I started writing it back in 2015, for a competition with the theme of "Historical Stories". But I didn't get much beyond planning the arc of the story and writing some of the first chapter. I quickly realised that the story I wanted to tell would take more than the 5000-word limit for the comp, and I didn't want to rush it. So I put it on one side, and tinkered with it on and off from time to time. At one point, I had about 5000 words written, but had second thoughts about how I wanted to reach the conclusion, so it got put aside again.

Then towards the end of last year I had a burst of activity on it, and got it more or less completed. Then, although it was finished, I decided not to post it straight away, but keep it until I'd finished a couple of other stories I was working on. In the end, it turned out to be the final one I posted to earn the "Omnium" Badge, for a story in each Lush category. Only six people before me have achieved this milestone, so it was nice to finish with a flourish, all six chapters on six successive days (and thanks again to the mods who made this possible).

500,000 profile views and an "Omnium" Badge (plus a competition 3rd place). Not such a bad end to a very weird 2020 after all.

It's called "The Decision", and brings the story to what I hope is a believable and satisfying conclusion.

It's called "Hand Relief" and the sexual content is starting to build.

Historical Note

Readers will notice references throughout the story to the “canonical hours”, the daily routine of prayer which all the nuns follow. These are as follows:

Matins (night-time)
Lauds (early morning)
Prime (first hour of daylight)
Terce (third hour)
Sext (noon)
Nones (ninth hour)
Vespers (sunset/evening)
Compline (end of the day)

The three major hours were Matins, Lauds and Vespers; the minor hours Terce, Sext, None and Compline.

The daily routine of the nuns would have followed the rhythm of the seasons, so the times of these would have been governed by the time the sun rose and set, rather than strictly by the clock.

My next story is something a little different. It's a short novel in six chapters about a young postulant (trainee nun) who is given the task of nursing a boy who has been injured in an accident.

The first chapter - "The Postulant's Tale: Chapter One - The Accident" - is online now.

Apart from a slightly salacious incident at the beginning, there's not much sex in this chapter. But hopefully the slow build will be worth it as the story progresses.

I'm planning to post a new chapter each day, to maintain the momentum. So you're in for a fun week, I hope!
